hey Bat57,

sorry man, i have lived in wyoming for 26 years and although i have hunted nowhere besides wyoming, i have never hunted south of lander. i have been there a number of times though. i have hunted green and crookes mountain which are south east of lander, many times. all the help i can give you is this; wyoming is looking real good this year, plenty of moisture, cooler temperatures, and i have already looked at a couple trophy deer this year. so welcome and good luck and keep us in tune to how you do.
actually now that i think about it, isn't area 94 or 95 up on green mountain, if so let me know, i can give you alot of information on this, if this is where you are hunting.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at the map I will be hunting in 91,93 or 94. Have ordered some topo maps and will be studing these area's harder. 94 looks pretty good from what I have studied on the internet. If you have a location in mind for me to check out I would appriciate it very much. I envy you living up there. I live in Oklahoma. It has been cooler and wetter than normal down here to. Should be a great hunting season. Thanks for your help and good luck this year. Only 42 days until I leave to head up there. If you would e-mail me the info you have. Thanks

Like i said before, i can't remember if Green Mountain is area 94, but for some reason that looks familiar. being a resident of the state, i usually don't pay alot of attetion to the area numbers. i usually hunt the same area year after year, so i know alot of those areas like the back of my hand. typically i check the regs to make 100% sure of the opening and closing days and the boundaries. mainly just to make sure no changes have been made that i was unaware of.

however, if green mountain is area 94 then here is some of the information i can tell you. number one, don't be afraid to hunt in the lower elevations off the mountain and in the sage country. it will be discouraging because it is such open country, and you can look up on the mountain so easily. but i am telling you, each and every year, the bigger deer are taken from the sage brush flats. i am telling you this because two years ago i hunted green and my buddy was determined to hunt the mountain, and only allowed for hunting the sage flats for one evening. because we were in his truck i had to shut my mouth and just go where he wanted to. on the third morning of the hunt i was looking out in the sage brush flats from up on the mountain and spotted a deer that from the distance i was looked to be a 185 class muley. needless to say, we went after him and was not successful, as the deer blend in very well in the sage and my buddy was kicking himself for not listening to me. i was born and raised in rawlins which is only about 30 miles from the base of green mountain, so i have spent many hours driving through muddy gap and right along area 94. many times, more than i can count, in my headlights i have seen big deer hanging around in the sage flats. they are there, they just dig in deep, and you would have to step on the bigger deer to get them to move.

however, if hunting up on the mountain is more your style, i would recommend huntint the northeastern part of the mountain, in and around the cooper creek area. i killed a deer there one year that gross just under 170b&c points. although the mountain and tree covered areas are limited you should have very little pressure no matter where you go.

good luck and keep us informed of your success. i will be hunting not far from green mountain, in fact just across the highway up on ferris mountian. this is a limited entry area and i have been applying for this particular area for 12 years, and finally drew a tag this year. it has been known to produce some big deer, so like you i am so excited, trying to get in shape, checking and double checking my supplies, shooting my rifle, amongst other things only make it worse. i have to wait until oct. 15 for opening morning.

Bat57, You must have applied for region E. I think thats a 100% draw for NR right?

I hunted region E through the 90's and my last time was in 02. Before they went to 4 pt. I had my application filled out for this fall, decided not to send, time problem.

I've hunted the areas your talking about, also 160, and around Green Mountain. Your going to have the choise of high rugged mountains, bad lands, canyons, and lots of rolling sage brush country. Good muley hunting.

What type of country do you prefer?

If you like the high country take the mountain road to the west of lander, paved at first then turns to gravel switch-backs. Beutifull spectacular country. The road comes out near South Pass. You will be able to hunt that country up to the wilderness.

I did most of my hunting to the West and North of the Beaver Rim divide. Great rugged Mule Deer country.

BLM maps are a must. Don't get caught trapped in the back country in bad weather. The weather can turn bad in that high dessert country quickly.

Let me know if I can be of more help.
