I am interested in becoming a hunting guide/outfitter and I was wondering what I had to do to become one. Is there a specific major in college I should study or just try to find a job with an outfitter. Thanks for your help.

"Don't do it, it's more addicting than heroin!!" =D>
Ummmmm, are they going to teach you how to spell "skool" at school" first? :))
Just razzin ya man...i couldn't help it!!! =D>
I could care less whether you have 'skoolin', I want people skills and knowledge of the critters. I recommend getting a good videocam and getting lots of footage of quality animals. Then make a 'resume' with footage along with a detailed narration of the animal(s) in the footage, send this out on cd's to several outfitters and hope for a call back. Cd's are cheap, I would focus on outfitters that primarily guide on private land over public land to get started since then you won't be expected to know a bunch of public land areas. Another option is to go to the hunting expo's and talk with the different outfitters there, most are always looking for new recruits. Remember, for me, I care MORE about people skills than 'guide' skills, I can teach you how to guide, I can't teach you how to deal with people.
Good luck and have fun!

Here is the link to a previous thread relating to your question. Please take a look and see if you can glean additional information (A lot of good stuff included).
PRO is EXACTLY right!!
There are a lot of good hunters out there, but real "people skills" are the key to being a successful guide and should be your #1 priority to master first.
I have been at it for 13 years and have seen a lot of differen't types of people and 95% of them have been awesome.
But every now and then you get tossed a curveball that can really test your patients. ](*,) b
going to a guide/ outfitter school is very important in my opinion, like pro stated alot is your people skills. which you will learn all about in the school. do you realize in most outfitters it is not 100% kill and there are not 375" bulls floating around like it's nothing. and the best of the outfitters still have over 75% return customers??? it's because people care about there hunting experiance as much as the kill[ this is not quite always the case when you are hunting l.e. units where someone is banking on you getting them in for the kill on a brute] i hired and worked with guides who would bring hrs of footage on big animals, thats great and all but what matters is what you do when the going gets tough!
i would recommend getting on the internet and looking up
dont get me wrong, i also guided with people who never even heard of a school and did like the others have said and have done real good. but you could see a difference! at least go and check it out talk to them and see for yourself.
i might have messed up, and i will find out whats right, but the website might be
