Hunting Wyoming Region W Oct 1

I have hunted what is now region W a few times. I'd say with some scouting and hard work on your part you have a fair chance to kill a fair buck. I guestimate we see about 20% of bucks better than 24 inches. I hunt north of 80.

Thanks for the info. I will be down near the Colorado line. Not much time for me to scout so I am relying on my brother who lives out there...

What unit did you draw? We hunted there last year. Unit 101 & 102 ("South") are known for massive horned bucks. Check out near the Sand Butte area, and around the Dickerson's Ranch. We go shed hunting out there quite a bit, and have found some great antlers. Most are from bucks that are probably still alive. Lots of Rock Springs residents hangin' out around there...they know where the big boys are at usually.
If you want to catch a monster, you'll have to be in a good spot well before sunrise. Those guys are smart and are bedded down by 8am already. Also, hike as much as you can off the roads, you'll be amazed how many bucks will wait until you get right up on them before they take off.
Oh yeah...and GLASS, GLASS, GLASS..with GOOD binocs.

My permit is for the whole region. 101 & 102 are both available to me. Thanks for the advice! My brother's friend specifically mentioned the Battle Mountain area...

Actually if you drew a region W tag, it is not good for areas 101,102 and 84. The areas you can hunt are 100, 82 and 131. 101, 102 and 84 are limited quota areas.

I didn't understand it at first. I was lucky because my wifes family lives there and they "educated" me. I would just hate to see you get mixed up and piss a warden off. I drew w too this year, we plan on hunting either 82 or 100. Good luck man.
