I drew Unit 40 Owyhee Mule Deer

Hello fellow mule deer hunters, I was fortunate enough to draw a unit 40 Owyhee mule deer hunt for November 1st thru the 24th. I know it looks bad to be the
New Guy on the forum, I go under the same name at Predator Masters Forums and contribute quite abit over there because of my love of predator hunting and call collecting. I would appreciate any tips or advice from those who have hunted it in the past. I will offer up any of my knowledge to you all as I am familar with some great units in several other states like NM and MT. Looking forward to a great rut hunt. Thanks

there is a guy who drew this tag on here 2 yrs ago i believe. i remember he shot a real nice 160-170 4x4. but i cant remember his user name. something like "gpwdeer"??? from idaho. i haven't noticed him around for a few months, but if you could use the search option, locate his thread, maybe you can p.m. him and he'd get an email. he's a great helper, he helped me with some info on an idaho hunt i did. in fact he also had another story where him and his dad ( or father in law) killed a couple spike bulls. try to find his posts and then send him a P.M.

by the way, is it bad i remember peoples hunts better than i do heir user names? lol

I hunt unit 42 for the speed goat and last year with the big buck tag. all i know about 40 is hunt south Mt. get some where high at frist light and start glassing. the mule deer are in the rut so you will see them running around like 18 year olds with there dad's visa.

This is what I got last year scored 170, 30 inches wide, 33 inch high. just has some small front that keeped him out of the 185 to 200s

I live within 30 minutes of the unit. Lucky lucky lucky,,,, I've been putting in for that tag for a number of years. Everybody thinks when you draw a late tag in the owhyees all you have to do is drive out and shoot a 190 class deer. Think again. There are deer that will make the 200 inch mark put they are far and few between. The general season is a 2-point only season, it gets hunted hard. You will have to hunt hard to find a 170-180 class deer. Its all about glassing,,, the unit is mostly juniper and sagebrush. Get up high and glass(of course). The unit is big so you should be alone, except for us cougar and coyote hunters. South mt. is full of big ranches,,,, cover your Utah plates and you might get a tip from a wrangler. Good luck!!

p.s. all you utah boys should fence off the state line,,,,,,,, the Wolves are coming!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice buck capt.nw! I appreciate the information, I have been on the phone with a few biologists and some folks who I know have hunted it as well...

highbasin, I know exactly what you mean. I managed a pretty good unit in Montana that everyone thinks is a 200 class producer but when you look in the B&C books you find out that it never has been that way but it is still a good unit. I do know that Unit 40 has placed alot of bucks in the books but you have to hunt hard for them for sure and I am all about hunting hard! I appreciate the info and fortunately for me it isn't far from where I live in Meridian to get to the unit.

Thanks to all who offer up tips and advice, I really appreciate it and will keep you posted....Tic Toc Is it NOV 1st YET? [-o<

Fireball.....what record book were you looking in to find the owyhees having alot of bucks entered? If you look again you will see it isnt the best.....from what I have seen down there over the last 10 years or so is not a lot of "book" deer....but more of the holy @#$% wow factor bucks that have one or two things holding them from going in the book.
The unit has gone way downhill with the forky season but still holds a ton of good 20-25" bucks....my buddy drew it last year and we were seeing 10-25 bucks a day with most being in the 22" range.....during the two weeks we were down there we only seen 4 shooter bucks....2 were 30" 4 points....one is dead and at my buddies house 24" Heavy 175" 4 point...and the other was a 25" 180 class buck early in the hunt that he regrets passing on.
I will more than likely be down there helping another guy that drew this year.....so I will keep an eye out for ya.

Fireball- you should do well out there and being so close will help a lot. I live in Caldwell and will be heading to Unit 18 can't do deer because I draw last year but will be looking for a Bull elk and a white tail. I have a buddy who loves unit 40 and he states he see big bucks out there every year. he states the ones that he sees are all over 30", but he also knows every rancher out there. So I think you will have a good chance at getting that 200"

Hey Youngbuck,
sorry for the confusion about record book books, I am not referring to it by actual numbers in the books but from what I have read in the Idaho Mule Deer book unit 40 has a "History" of producing book bucks versus the Montana hunting district I was referring to.

Capt.nw, thanks for the words of encouragement, I plan on putting the tag to good use. Either way, I know the hunt will be an enjoyable experience for sure.

Thanks,
Dave

Now I see why the locals try to keep 42 quiet..lol

Hi guys I am new to the forum and also to muley madness. I am excited to say that i drew out for unit 40 late tag this year 2012. I have been scouting out south mountain and have seen a lot of sign but only one deer. He was pretty nice for a last day buck but i am looking for something a bit larger. For anyone that has hunted unit 40 for mule deer, I would like to know how the deer react during november. Yes granted it depends on the weather but what should i expect this november?
