I need advice, and information

Hello,

Not sure I am finding what I am looking for here or really if I know what I am looking for. My father and are going to northwest Utah in 2009 Lynn Utah I think is the closest town. Grouse Creek area? I am 46, my father is 75. Neither of us have ever hunted or seen a mule deer other than in pictures. This may be his last year to hunt and I want some quality time with him. I found an outfitter that seems to understand and sounds pretty decent on the phone. We will be hunting the end of september, the first of october. Both my father and I shoot 30-06's. I just bought him a new Nikon scope it is a Monarch, 4x16 by 50.

Can someone tell me how the deer are in North West Utah. I believe it is a private property hunt. Big Deer? A lot of Deer? How are muley.s different in hunting than Michigan White tails. My father has never had an opportunity even at a nice rack on a white tail. A small 3x3 is the best he has done all his life. Any information on the weather, hunting techniques, deer population or anything else related to a first time mule deer hunter would be appreciated. Thanks Bob

Get in the best physical shape that you can get into. If you are not used to climbing mountains then be aware that they can really wear you out. It will be helpful to have an outfitter that will try to take it easy on your 75 year old Dad but you need to help the outfitter out by being in good shape so that you may help him drag , pack or take care of downed game. In 2007 my Brother-in-law came to hunt with me in Nevada and was mad at me for not stessing enough about being in good shape. My reply was that I did tell him. He said that I should have really, really strssed it. GET IN SHAPE!!!!!!! Look up "altitude sickness" and be prepared for that also. Be ready for warm, to freezing temperatures, rain and snow. It is not uncommon to hunt in snow one day and sunshine the next. Most use the hunting method of "spot and stalk" meaning that they get on a mountain and look for deer with binoculars and spotting scopes. Once you find one your willing to shoot, then you close the distance by hiking within gun range. North West Utah is known for having a good bit of hunting pressure so hunting private property is in your favor. Grouse Creek area is open country with plenty of sage brush, and plenty of Pinion and Juniper trees that grow in patches as compared to Michigan. Good luck to you and your Father. I think it is great that the two of you are going West together on your first Western hunt. I've never hunted Utah but I have hunted Nevada just accross the State line from Grouse Creek. Again, goodluck. fatrooster. P.S. If you are driving to Utah then be sure that you get gas when ever you can. Gas stations are sometimes far and few between in the West.
