I need some bow advice

I've owned a bow since 2001 but haven't spent much time with it. I know absolutely nothing about compounds and how to get them performing best, but I've had it worked on at archery shops on a few different occasions. I still can't quite get the accuracy out of my bow that I would like and have made a commitment this winter to shoot alot and be ready for next fall. I'm kind of a DIY-er and am looking for a book that explains how to tweak a compound, if such a book exists. I'd like to get mine shooting good and I'm tired of having it tuned by other people.

I don't know if you are shooting with a release but it makes a huge difference in accuracy.

Yes, I shoot with a release.

What Kind of Bow are you shooting? Compound or Recurve?

It is a compound, a 2001 Mathews. It shot good when I first got it. Now, despite a couple of tunings at archery shops, I can watch the arrows wobble and try to stabilize. I actually shoot better groups at 40 yards than at 30.

How old is the String? Might want to start by replacing it if it's a couple years old. also what kind of Rest? I had a bad drop away & after it was replaced it solved a lot of accuracy issues.

The string hasn't been shot much. The rest is a trophy taker, I think.

sounds like you need to paper tune it. look it up, there are a few sites that explain it, or take it to a shop and have it done. I think the reason your arrows wobble is your rest is either left or right, or your knocking point is not square.

A bow is not a rifle. You can't pick it up twice a year and expect to hit what ever every time. Put a wrist loop on your bow so you can shoot with out closeing your fingers around the grip, this will elimenate torqe or twisting the bow. Use the same ancher point everytime. I put my first finger knuckle on my earlobe every time. Find a natural ancher point for yourself and be awhere of it every time you draw. If you shoot with a peep make sure that the the pin is lined up in the center evrytime. Shoot your bow about 20 minutes 3 or 4 times a week. Don't be to quick to change things(sight adjustment) until you've shot at the same spot at the same distance more than three or four times. Stay at 10 or 20 yards until your knocking the fletching off your prevuios shots. Practice Practice Practice. I hope this helps you out a little. And don't forget to pratice.

This article seems to hit most of the basics that I'd suggest, worth a read. Jeff is right start with a paper tune tho I had a problem with something as small as my nock being pinched throwing the side of my arrows into the rest, didn't figure it out until a paper tune.

No... and it still makes my stomach turn to think that buck died w/o being recovered. i pray it wasnt as good a shot as l originally thought and he made it through. He was a big, strong animal so if there was ever a buck that could survive something like that, he would be able to do it.

Do you hunt Nevada or Utah, or both?

Man hopefully he made it, We could always throw up a cam to see if he's still running around.

I haven't hunted NV for a while but I'm putting in this year. I hunt whitetail in WI over Thanksgiving more to see the family than really hunt. I've been scouting Utah for years but never had the time to bow hunt it until this year.

I had three bucks at 80 yards opening day just where I thought they'd be one being significantly bigger than the two but just couldn't close the deal to many eyes. Still I had a blast..
