Idaho Chuckar, quail & Sage Grouse

All three seasons open up this saturday in southwest Idaho. I am going out Saturday morning to hunt some chuckars & Huns (grey partridge/hungarian partridge). I also saw a big group of sage grouse last weekend. That is tempting. The problem is you are only allowed one sage grouse per day. Long way to go to get one bird. I'd rather chase something that I can shoot 8 of (chuckars).

Anyone else headed out this weekend?

General Fall turkey opens this weekend to. I'm heading out see if I can fill that tag (no luck in the spring). I'm hoping I can flush some upland birds to round out the day. Nothing like turkey, upland, and deer scouting to keep you busy on a trip.

Good luck and have fun.

Well, unfortunately my alarm was set for the p.m. instead of the a.m. Needless to say, I slept in, got to the hill late. I started hunting at 9:00. It was already 65 degrees and the hill was dry as a bone.

I managed to find a single hun which got up in front of my retriever. I shot once and dropped it. Dog retrieved the bird and it seemed like we were off to a good start. One shot, one kill.

Shortly after, my pointer pup busted a small group with two or three huns in it about 45 yards from where I was. No shot.

Didn't see another bird.

Not too great for a season opener. I was so excited. I have seen so many birds down low, but fear of snakes forced me to hunt high. I think I will stick to grouse and doves until we get some rain and some cooler weather.
