It's almost time

It won't be long now until the new group of members sign up looking for info. on a hunt they drew. Only to never hear from them again after October. Remember Harvey? That was pretty cool how excited he was to hunt muleys for the first time and how hard he tried to have his dad enjoy his hunt. =D>

Harvey at least reported back right? So he was the exception to the rule, be nice if everyone shared more but alas. :) Should be exciting for a few members for sure, I'm hoping my little brother draws the Pauns. Rifle tag. :thumb

If I wasn't willing to help out strangers with no thought of them returning the favor, I wouldn't be a part of this forum. I guess my attitude is that first; helping others find success is fun, and second; what goes around does come around. I have appreciated the help that members of this forum have given me, but my favorite experience was helping a complete stranger kill a nice buck in an old hunting spot that I used to enjoy when I was a kid. I think we all have those sacred spots that we would never divulge, but all of us also have info to give that we don't mind sharing and wont "hurt" our own outdoors activities. I think the whole process is great and I'm glad to have a part in it. I'm also glad to have met the members that I've spent time in the field with and look forward to meeting a few more of you guys this coming season. Best of luck to all in the pending draws!------shooter

Well said Shooter...

My hunting life has spanned 5 decades and during that time I have helped more than a few fellow hunters find a "spot" to hunt. But most of those have been through personal meetings, not on the internet. Now it is so easy to just pop on a hunting site, ask for this or that and hope for some kind of lead. Sure, many of those kind of folks probably don't even do any kind of pre-season scouting, and probably sight in thier weapon the weekend before the hunt, but some don't follow that path. Kinda hard to know who is who on the net (???)

I really don't see the harm in giving general advice, but then that's just me. When I first came back to Utah after a 35 year stint in Calif, I asked some general questions and was pretty well shunned and sent to places I already knew were pretty thin, but I took it with a grain of salt. There are those who will help and those who wont. So be it and such is life I guess. Anyway, good luck to all this year! :)

just wanted to clarify that i said send them away from where your going.... not send them to the middle of nowhere and say its good hunting. just send them to a spot where some deer/elk/turky/etc. are thats a little ways away from where you want to be. Maybe its just me but, If i could have a whole mountain to myself i would love it.

Having said all that, I do know exactly what Ridgetop is talking about. It is very easy to be annoyed by a person whose 2nd post on the madness is a where/what/when question about a tag that they have draw in an area that they have never been. And I too would love to have the mountain all to myself, but here is a little logic I tell myself when I have had it with the crowds; It takes every one of us to protect the heritage that we all enjoy. Simply put, if we were alone on the mountain, we'd have to be taking a nature walk because hunting would certainly be banned. I believe that we all need each other and we need to be actively recruiting new folks all the time if we want to ensure that our grandkids will one day cuss the crowded mountian on opening day like we do. And besides, we have NONYA to put these people in their place when they get out of line.;)-----shooter

I know I'm looking foreward to helping some new hunters this year. Last year I was able to give advice to a hunter from California about the Vernon unit and he ended up shooting a 10x6 and was very grateful for my help.

good job ridge, can you share some pics???

i dont have a problem with people asking about some of the tougher to draw areas, as i have done the same. Its hard to scout every unit before applying.

good luck to everyone in the draws

The way I look at it "there is so much country out there" I will help most anyone.
I do look for a certain bit of sincerity in their posts however.
And for them to at least report back with their experience.

After years of Midwest whitetail hunting and only rifle hunting in the west I for one appreciate the bow hunting help I've found on this site.
I found I didnt have to hike to far to be alone which is a nice change from everyone sporting Orange jump suits on every corner.

I used to invite a hunter or two to come hunt every year until last year. Some killed game some didn't. Most expected western hunting to be like the Primos videos. The last ones saw lots of game but were unwilling to listen much, expected my wife to make meals and were just rude. One said that he had spent alot of money on a tag and travel and had better get a deer. He missed lots. We pulled camp and left them there by themselves. I haven't done it since. Some I give advice to think I'm a genius, some fail. I leave it up to them.

We (me, my dad, and his friends i hunt with) have taken a few people out hunting with us through my 6 years of big game hunting but most were related or friends of the usual group we hunt with.

Glad that i have not had a bad experience like that. I think i would have made a meaner choice than to just leave them. Probably take all the food, ovens, water, things like that. But im still young and hot headed. :))
