Fair to give his apology here also...

"I was wrong, BIG TIME

Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles.

My blog inflamed legions of people I love most….. hunters and shooters. Obviously, when I wrote that blog, I activated my mouth before engaging my brain.

Let me explain the circumstances surrounding that blog. I was hunting coyotes, and after the hunt was over and being beat up by 60 mph winds all day, I was discussing hunting with one of the young guides. I was tired and exhausted, and I should have gone to bed early. When the guide told me that there was a “huge” following of hunters who use AR 15’s and similar weapons to hunt prairies dogs, I was amazed. At that point I wrote the blog, and never thought it through.

Now then, you might not believe what I have to say, but I hope you do. How is it that Zumbo, who has been hunting for more than 50 years, is totally ignorant about these types of guns. I don’t know. I shot one once at a target last year, and thought it was cool, but I never considered using one for hunting. I had absolutely no idea how vast the numbers of folks are who use them.

I never intended to be devisive, and I certainly believe in United we Stand, Divided we Fall. I’ve been an NRA member for 40 years, have attended 8 national NRA conventions in the last 10 years, and I’m an advisory board member for the United States Sportsmen’s Alliance which actively fights anti-hunters and animal rights groups for hunter’s rights.

What really bothers me are some of the unpatriotic comments leveled at me. I fly the flag 365 days a year in my front yard. Last year, through an essay contest, I hosted a soldier wounded in Iraq to a free hunt in Botswana. This year, through another essay contest, I’m taking two more soldiers on a free moose and elk hunt.

When I started blogging, I was told to write my thoughts, expressing my own opinion. The offensive blog I wrote was MY opinion, and no one else’s. None of the companies that I deal with share that opinion, nor were they aware of what I had written until this firestorm started.

Believe it or not, I’m your best friend if you’re a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I’m sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he’s known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15’s and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15’s. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I’m sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth.

I shared my feelings(and my Dumbo pic) with Ted Nugent, this was his response to my thoughts.
"I too was blown away by the insane mis-statements by Zumbo. However, I refuse to remain blown away but rather gather myself up & use this as the Spotlight on our shooting industry/community's gross lack of sophistication on this American freedom life & death issue. Now that Jim has been educated he has apologized & apparently dedicated himself to educating the other misinformed dolts in our shootworld. Dont let kneejerk anger fog a clear op to flush out the cockroaches amongst us. It is a much better use of this moment than simply staying angry at Zumbo. He is now our ally. Use this for further UPGRADE!! Plz."

I'm not a big fan fo AR's but I have friends that love them especially for varmints, and I've always been a firm believer in "to each his own". That said there are a couple things that impressed me about this. First that Zumbo apoligised for his comments and that he seems to be trying to learn from this. and second that you got a reply from the Nuge that wassn't just a generic one sentence answer. That's awesome! I've always liked Uncle Ted!

Brett, thanks a bunch for posting Mr. Zumbo's response to the backlash. I held back on commenting on this thread in large part because I wanted to see if there would be any sort of apology or re-enforcement by Mr. Zumbo. I'm glad to hear that he did indeed respond and "back-tracked" a bit on his original blog. After all, I am certain that we have ALL put our foot in our mouths at least once and wished we could take it back. However, very FEW of us have done it in front of the general public and thus put ourselves directly in the glare of public opinion. I personally accept his apology, whether it was heart-felt (which I believe it was) or monitarily driven.
I'm in the same boat as J0n, I PERSONALLY do not care for the AR15 but do not fault others for owning or shooting them. I firmly believe in the right to bare arms whether or not I care for that particular firearm.
Thanks again Brett.

Jim said more...

If we/he gets bashed we at least need to listen to his response...
The last few days have been an educational experience, to say the least. My ill-conceived inflammatory blog, as all of you now know, set off a firestorm that, I’m told, has never before been equaled. I’m not proud of that.
Let me say this at the outset. My words here are from the heart, and all mine. No one can censor me, and I answer to no one but myself. And I have no one to blame but myself. Outdoor Life, a magazine that I worked for full-time as Hunting Editor for almost 30 years, fired me yesterday. My TV show was cancelled yesterday. Many of my sponsors have issued statements on their website to sever all relationships. This may cause many of you to do backflips and dance in the streets, but, of course, I’m not laughing, nor am I looking for sympathy. I don’t want a pity party.

They say hindsight is golden. Looking back, I can’t believe I said the words “ban” and “terrorist” in the context that I did. I don’t know what I was thinking when I wrote that. I can explain this as sheer ignorance and an irresponsible use of words. What I’ve learned over the last few days has enlightened and amazed me. As a guy who hunts 200 days a year, does seminars on hunting, wrote for six hunting magazines, had a hunting TV show, and wrote 20 books on hunting, how could I have been so ignorant and out of touch with reality in the world of hunting and shooting?

But I was. I really can’t explain it, maybe because I just summarily dismissed the firearms in question in my mind when I saw them in magazines and catalogs. I saw one “black” firearm in a hunting camp in all my 50 years of hunting, and I shot one last year off a boat when fishing in Alaska. To tell the truth, it was fun and I enjoyed it immensely, but I never considered one for use in hunting. I have to tell you that I have had a revelation. I’m learning that many of my pals own AR-15’s and similar firearms and indeed use them for hunting. I was totally unaware that they were being used for legitimate hunting purposes. That is the absolute truth.

My biggest regret is not the financial impact of all this. I’m almost 67 and retirement is an option. The dreadful impact here is that I inadvertently struck a spear into the hearts of the people I love most…America’s gun owners. And, even though this huge cadre of dedicated people have succeeded in stripping me of my career, I hold no grudges. I will continue to stand as firm on pro hunting as I’ve ever done. But what’s different now is that I’ll do all I can to educate others who are, or were, as ignorant as I was about “black” rifles and the controversy that surrounds them. My promise to you is that I’ll learn all I can about these firearms, and by the time this week is out, I’ll order one. The NUGE has invited me to hunt with him using AR-15’s, and I’m eager to go, and learn. I’ll do all I can to spread the word.

I understand that many of you will not accept this apology, believing that the damage has been done and there’s no way to repair it. You have that right. But let me say this. I mentioned this above, and I’ll repeat it. I’m willing to seize this opportunity to educate hunters and shooters who shared my ignorance. If you’re willing to allow me to do that, we can indeed, in my mind, form a stronger bond within our ranks. Maybe in a roundabout way we can bring something good out of this.

Again, Thanks. Just I stated in my post above, this is what I was hoping for. I would rather give a man a chance to either stand by his word or apologize vice instantaniously vilify him for what may very well be a "foot-in-mouth" incident. Especially someone who has been a hunting advocate and friend to gun owners for all these years.

I've hesitated to share this...but decided to give my thoughts and maybe this will put us all back in reality a bit...

A 17 year old teenager (drunk) hit a family here in Utah week or 2 ago. The Father (Chris Williams) and 1 son survived, his wife and 2 children were killed in the accident.

Here are a few quotes from the father who happens to be a very good God fearing Christian man...
"This is truly a bitter cup my family was asked to partake in,"

"I did not want that healing to be hampered by another step in the process, and that was getting over anger.

"And so perhaps it was the easy way out. I decided to forgive then and there.
There is more to the story, but yes this man granted forgiveness on the spot to the 17 year old driver. Some would call this "weak", I say this man showed more courage, faith, and understanding than most humans.

So if a Father can forgive someone who just took 3 members of his family...we can certainly forgive Mr. Zumbo's comments.

I don't know much about Mr. Zumbo or follow him much (but do know he has been a big player in the hunting world). But lets not get to carried away here. There is more important things in life than some words in a blog comment.

Just a couple of my 2 ($$)

Looks like Zumbo tripped and fell off a cliff here. I feel sorry for the guy, the immediacy and broad reach of the internet bit him here. I like the guy and his hunting shows. I have 2 friends that use AR-15's for prairie dogs and occaisionally for coyotes, but other than that I'll go ahead and stick my foot in my mouth and say that I can't see a use for this type of rifle for big game. The few times that I have bothered to rifle hunt for deer in my adopted home state of MN, I can hear guys go "bang-bang-bang-bang-bang" in about 2 seconds, and I mutter to myself "what I blaming idiot".

I never saw the blog but I can see why folks went into an uproar if he used the word "terrorist". He also gave an apology. I've met the man, sat through one of his elk hunting seminars, use his cookbook and have successfully used his cow call on a few occassions. He's a decent man who stepped down from OL and is trying to correct his mouthinfootitus. I've never shot an AR-15 but I have shot the M-16 on many occassions, even in full auto. I don't see a need for an AR-15 for any type of hunting but there is a definite need in the shooting sports for them. Leg matches are about 75% AR-15/M-15's and the rest a mix of M-1's and M-14's. I also see no need for one for home protection. Shotgun or pistol is best there. Give the guy a break. I doubt there are few folks on this earth that have the hunting knowledge or experience of this man. He still has a lot to offer the hunting world and we'll be lucky if he comes back.

#@#% i just spent 5 min. typing then hit the wrong button a deleted it!!!!

any way-- it may be me that is wrong on this one but, i've talked to a few guys that have guided him in Chama, New Mexico- there impression was very poor of him. apperently when the hunting was not at its VERY best he was a jerk to be around in camp. They said that the complaining did not quit and he was not a very "hard" hunter, basically wanted an easy kill of A whopper bull for the camera. he seems to come of very spoiled to me! that said I probably should not base my judgement on 1 group of people's opinion, you never know what led up to this. but if true, this is uncalled for especially from someone who is supposed to have seen it all! no matter where you hunt there is always going to be some time that the hunting is not quit as good as you wanted it to be.
