I haven't been around for a little while. Been a little busy this summer. I'll start by saying, I haven't drawn out for a big game permit in over 10yrs now..
I used to hunt the Bookcliffs. For more than 30yrs, our family, and about 8 or 9 other families and their kids drove 200+ miles from SLC, starting Thursday afternoon, stopping just outside of Roosevelt for the night. Then getting up early and having breakfast in town and spending till noon driving into to "Ridge". We spent the rest of Friday setting up camp and scouting, I don't know why we scouted, the deer were always on the ridge.
We would get up early on Saturday and drive out to a spot we knew, walk 4-500yds. and sit on a rock till about 9am, then walk a canyon or two if we hadn't had any success, usually Dad and I would take at least one or both by the afternoon. We were luckier than most of the people in our camp, or maybe just a little better hunters, who knows. It was especially nice for me in the later years when my son's and Dad could hunt with me.
In the last 10yrs Dad has past away, I'm disabled and my one son has moved to Indiana. It's been my fondest dream to be able to get back to the Bookcliffs and I want to thank my lucky stars for drawing out for a cow elk later this year. Dad won't be their, except in spirit, but my oldest son is flying out from Indiana along with his son and my youngest son is going too. How nice is that!
Just goes to show, even with no points, someone has to draw out......
