Grizzly
It was the day Hunter and Matt were waiting for. They were finally going on the backpacking trip that they have planned for half a year. Now that the day was here Hunter and Matt felt rushed to make sure they had everything, and were not going to leave anything behind.
Hunter had a weird feeling and wasn’t so sure that they had everything, so he asked.
“Do you think we got everything Matt?”
“Yeah I think so, I hope so.”
“Well we are going to leave, guess well figure out later if we forgot anything.”
They were off. Leaving at 4:00 AM from Hunters house, and on toward a seven hour trip, their destination being Yellowstone National Park.
“Hey, Matt did you bring your map?”
“Uh, let me look. I thought I had it.”
“Well, do you have it or not?”
“No.”
Angrily Hunter turned the pickup around in the middle of the highway, not even taking a glance around to see if there were any cars coming.
“How do you forget one of the most important things?”
“It’s four in the morning give me a damn break.”
They argued with each other all the way back to retrieve the map. Hunter an Matt both knew that every time they argued like this, they were just doing it for fun and giving each other crap.
After retrieving the map and explaining to Hunters parents why they returned so fast already, they set off on the road again. This time hoping that they would not have to turn around and go back again.
Ten miles down the road Hunter looked over at Matt because of the loud noise that was coming from his nostrils, and noticed that Matt had passed out and was snoring very loudly. Hunter could not help himself.
“If I can’t sleep, than he can’t sleep.”
Hunter came up with this evil plan. As soon as he reached the next straight away, Hunter slammed on the brakes and turned the wheel to the left, just enough to make the car jerk over into the opposite lane. Matt jumped out of his seat; white as snow, yelling in a high pitched terrified voice.
“I don’t want to die!”
Hunter was laughing so hard he could barely drive the pickup, and couldn’t catch his breath.
“What the hell are you doing Hunter?”
“There was an ant in the road and I didn’t want to damage my truck by hitting it.”
“Screw you man I am going back to sleep.”
Matt eventually dosed off to sleep again. Hunter could see the sunrise creeping up above the horizon in a yellowish pink color. Hunter was so aghast staring at the amazing colors the sunrise made. He almost didn’t notice the deer walking across the road. He quickly slammed on the brakes and came to a screeching halt. But not soon enough, there was a loud thud as he hit the deer in the rear end. After the impact the deer spun wildly falling to the ground, it slid across the asphalt leaving a trail of warm blood across the road. It was dead. Hunter looked over at Matt who was not moving, with his eyes as big and white as the moon, digging his nails into his seat.
“Hey, Matt, you can calm down now.”
“What just happened?”
“There was another ant in the road. But we hit it this time.”
“You’re a jerk, what really happened?”
“Deer.”
“Huh?”
“We hit a deer!”
Hunter pulled over and got out and look at the damage this creature had put on his pickup. When he walked around to the front of the truck he was afraid to look. Images of a huge dent and thousands of dollars slipping out of his fingers were going through his head. His eyes lit up as he looked at the damage, there was not a scratch. The only evidence of the deer was a small chunk of gray and brown hairs stuck in his license plate, which read brn2hnt. A little chuckle left Hunters mouth, he could not hold it back, he was so lucky.
Hunter got back into the pickup and with a sigh of relief started the truck and drove on for there destination, some three hundred miles away. The rest of the drive was smooth and uneventful, with no dead animals, and no more turning around to get something they had forgotten.
“Hey wake up were stopping.”
“Why, where are we?”
“Were in Cody Wyoming, and I have to pee!”
“But people in Wyoming scare me.”
They pulled into the parking lot of the gas station and both got out to stretch their legs. Hunter immediately ran inside to go to the bathroom. Matt decided he could get over his fear and go in to look around for a snack, since he did not eat breakfast. As he was looking around he glanced in the direction of the cashier. What he saw was the meanest looking, biggest and ugliest man he had ever seen. The man stood about half a foot taller that Matt who was 5’7”, The man looked to weigh about 300 pounds. He stared at Matt with a look to kill and that of hunger. His bottom jaw was hanging down exposing his two brown teeth, and his black tongue. Juice was dripping from his chin from the large bulge in his bottom lip, collecting in his mangled mountain man beard. Matt could not stop staring. He noticed that the Green hat this monster was wearing happened to say “Kill for fun” on the front.
“What are you looking at boy?”
The voice of the man sent Matt into a panic, he ran to the bathroom.
“Hunter we gotta go!”
Matt grabbed Hunter ran out of the bathroom and ran son a beeline straight for the exit.
“Dude what the hell, at least let me pull my pants up. What is going on?”
“That monster wanted to kill and eat me. He was drooling and staring at me while licking his lips.”
“Ha, you’re an idiot Matt.”
“I hate Wyoming and we are not going to stop again until we get to the park.”
They eventually left the gas station and headed for Yellowstone which was about another thirty miles. After the uneventful thirty mile drive where the only thing that occurred was Matt’s complaining about how much he hates Wyoming. They reached the east entrance of the park. They paid the entrance fee to get into the park and finally they were in.
“Where should we go first Matt, we have about half the day left before it gets dark?”
“Lets eat!”
“Good idea.”
They decided that they would eat at the Yellowstone McDonalds, since that would be their last real meal until they got out of the backcountry. The McDonalds was much different than any you would see in a regular town or city. It looked like a big log cabin, built with huge logs that were a very dark brown color. The building was huge, with a smaller glass building built into the side of it. Matt and Hunter were surprised that Yellowstone would even have a McDonalds. After parking what seemed like fifty miles away, they reached the front door, as they walked in they saw tons and tons of people, most of them tourists and some of them people that worked at the park. The glass building protruding from the side of the building was actually the play place for the children to play on while their parents ate. Matt and Hunter went up to order, they ordered the most food they have ever ordered at McDonalds, knowing that they wouldn’t have “good” food until they got back from backpacking.
“Can I get four double cheeseburgers, two medium fries, a chicken sandwich, and a large Dr. Pepper?”
“Dang Hunter, how are you going to eat all of that?”
“I plan to eat some later; you do know that this is the last real food for 3 days right?”
“O yeah, good point.”
After hogging down as much juicy, greasy, and delicious burgers as they could fit into their stomachs they moaned and groaned holding their stomachs all the way back to the pickup.
“Where to Matt?”
“Let’s go to Old Faithful.”
So they slowly made their way to Old Faithful stopping here and there behind tons of tourists taking pictures of buffalo clogging the road. This made Matt and Hunter very annoyed, for they have seen buffalo millions of times and to them they are nothing but a bunch of cattle.
Finally they reached Old Faithful. They went in to find out when it would erupt, they found out that it wouldn’t erupt for another hour. They both decided very easily on what to do. They would set an alarm on a phone and sleep in the truck. They were both exhausted from waking up at three a.m. so they could leave by four. Both of them fell asleep within a few minutes.
The loud roar of a huge grizzly woke them up. They looked out the front windshield and there was the biggest Grizzly they had every seen. Its head was bigger than a basketball; each paw seemed just as big. It was a giant blonde colored grizzly. The bear put both of its front paws on the hood of the truck digging its railroad tie sized, razor sharp claws into the hood, crinkling it as if it were a pop can. The giant grizzly pushed down on the hood making the trucks suspension bounce. It was as if this bear was having fun playing with the truck and frightening the people inside of it. It was not having fun, it was a very hungry bear and could smell something very tasty inside. The look on the bear’s eyes as it let out the loudest roar Hunter had ever heard was that of a killer hungry for human flesh and blood. Drool was falling from the grizzly’s mouth covering the hood of the truck. As soon as the bear had appeared, it had disappeared. Crawling back up from the floor of the truck Hunter poked his head above the window to look around; the bear’s head was inches from his, the breath of the bear fogging up the glass. It let out another deep roar that seemed could shatter the glass. The bear had popped down below the window again and Hunter peeked back over it again to see if this monster had left. He could hear music, having no clue where it was coming from he yelled at Matt to turn the radio off. There was no response. He looked and Matt was not there, he was alone. The music was still playing, it was coming from outside, he looked and the huge grizzly was laying on its back singing a very familiar song to Hunter, it was “Country Fried” by the Zac Brown Band. As Hunter stared at this bear something hit him in the back of the head. He looked over and it was Matt.
“Dude wake up and turn your alarm off.”
“Where were you?”
“What are you talking about Hunter?”
Hunter finally realized that he had been dreaming and the music was not coming from a magical singing bear but it was coming from his phone alarm.
The two got out of the truck and headed off for the Old Faithful show. They barely got there and the big hole in the ground launched the water inside of it straight up. Seconds later it was over.
“Did we really have to wait that long for that Matt?”
“Well we did, and it was dumb!”
“Oh well lets leave.”
The two headed for the truck and decided they would drive to the camp they planned to stay the first night at. When they arrived they unpacked there bags, set up there tents, and grabbed some much needed sleep.
The next day the packed up and prepared for their long hike into the backcountry. Driving down to the backcountry office to acquire the papers they needed they were both very excited and also a tiny bit nervous. After about a half hour of talking to one of the parks service ladies, they were at the Heart Lake trailhead. Checking to make sure they had everything and not forgetting a single thing this time because there is no going back to get it. Hunter made this very clear to Matt.
They threw there huge backpacks in their backs and headed down the thin trail, both of them very anxious to see what is around each bend and over each hill. Over the next hill was a beautiful lake that was a bright blue color. They stopped at this lake to fill their waters and enjoy watching and taking pictures of a huge bull moose at the other end of the small lake. After filtering their water the two headed off for the next few miles of there hike. The rest of the hike was at he base of a magnificent mountain that seemed to go on forever. This mountain that they were hiking around would be the one they would hike the next day.
At the arrival of their camp they through off their heavy pack’s and ran for the large lake that was nearby. Hunter didn’t even slow down when he reached the lake he was so hot and tired from the long hike he didn’t care how cold it was. As soon as the water level had reached Hunters chest he had lost his breath and instantly went numb.
“Matt stop, this water is so cold!”
“How cold?”
“Well I guess it’s not bad after you get used to it. I am numb now and it actually feels kind of good.”
They swam around for about an hour until it started getting dark. They quickly got out and dried themselves off and went to set up their tents. After having a nice warm meal they decided to make a fire and enjoy the beautiful night. They lit a huge fire and laid back to enjoy the hot flames. As they sat around the fire Hunter and Matt noticed sounds behind them in the black woods. This scared them a little, but they both just figured that it was a small animal looking for scraps of dropped and forgotten food. They soon forgot about the sounds and put the fire out leaving it to sizzle and steam from the cold water being dumped upon it. They headed to their tents crawled in and fell fast asleep.
Hunter woke up hearing something outside, which sounded like a lazy person shuffling there feet and digging through everything they had out there. Hunter quickly woke up Matt
“Matt, Wake up!”
“Let me sleep.”
“No, do you hear that?”
“Yeah, wha…..”
Before Matt could get out another sentence whatever was outside was pushing up against there tent. It looked like an animal’s nose and was also making a sniffing sound of the nose of something big and hungry. They both knew it was a bear but were praying that they were wrong. The bear picked up one of its paws and put it on the tent, its huge claws slashing through it. The bear backed up and put its huge head through the whole it had just made. The nose was the first thing Hunter saw and he grabbed his knife and stabbed at the bear as hard as he could. He felt his knife slam into the bear’s huge boney nose, the sharp tip crushing the bear’s nose and slicing any thing soft it comes into contact with. Immediately blood sprayed from the bear’s nose. The bear let out a bawling roar and ran off into the woods. Hunter thinking that this was just another bad dream laid back down and went to sleep not even saying a word to Matt.
When hunter woke up the nest morning he remembered his dream as if it had really happened to him.
“Dude, how could you just go right back to sleep like nothing happened last night?”
Hunter had no idea what Matt was talking about and he picked up his head and saw that what had happened last night was very real. There was a huge tear in the tent and blood covering the tent floor. Hunter noticed that he had a death grip on his large hunting knife which was covered in blood.
Hunter and Matt talked about what had just happened to them last night and decided that after what had happened to that bear it would not bother them again.
Today they would hike to the top of the mountain they had been camping near. Both of them prepared their day packs with plenty of water and food. The hike up was treacherous with switchbacks up the whole mountain that seemed to be straight up and straight down. When they finally reached the top they had a quick lunch and enjoyed the scenery. Being on top of that huge mountain they could see for miles.
After about an hour on top of the mountain they headed back for camp. Both of them already very warn out. The hike down seemed harder on their legs and the two celebrated when they reached level ground. When reaching the level ground Hunter heard a noise.
“What was that?”
“Huh?”
“It sounded like a bear.”
“Shut-up you are just paranoid from last night.”
As soon as Matt had finished talking he heard the noise also. And a huge male grizzly jumped out of the bushes and charged them. Disregarding all the people that told them to play dead, they both leaped up into a tree and barely got above the bears reach. Although Matt’s backpack wasn’t so lucky, the bear had reached the backpack and ripped it open spilling what left of Matt’s lunch was in there. The Grizzly ate the lunch and sniffed around the tree until it had finally dosed off and took a nap right at the base of the tree. While this beast slept below them, they both noticed the bear had a huge red gash from its right eye down to the tip of its nose. It was the bear that had shown up last night.
After two hours had gone by it was getting dark and Matt and Hunter were starving. They broke off branches and threw them at the bear hoping it would wake up and leave. It woke up but did not leave. Instead the bear sniffed around the tree some more and used it as a scratching post marking his territory claiming Matt and Hunter as his. Eventually the bear meandered off and Matt and Hunter climbed down and ran to their camp and started a fire as quick as they could. Fire was the only thing that made the two feel safe right now. They eventually dosed off and woke up thanking the lord that this bear they had given the nickname Scar two did not bother them again in the night.
The bear did bother their camp site. When they went to pack their bags and tents up everything in the camp was spread everywhere and there tents and backpacks were torn apart. They were able to salvage a few things such as cameras and binoculars and anything else the bear didn’t decide was food.
“Well Hunter, we have nothing, we can’t stay again.”
“Yeah, you’re right let’s just leave before this bear finally is able to eat us.”
They put all of the things they could save into Hunters daypack and they headed off toward the vehicle and safety. They decided that they would take the same trail back since their maps were shredded and the GPS was crunched by the mouth of Scar. On the way back they reached an open field, when they almost reached the other end of the field Matt heard something drop. He turned around and found that he had dropped his water bottle. As he looked up he saw a brown blob on the trail at the far end of the trail. Picking up his binoculars and looking at this thing, Hunter gasped and told hunter that Scar is following them. Neither of them wanted another confrontation with this huge bear so they both decided that they would jog the rest of the way, about one more mile.
Ten minutes later they could see the blue of the truck through the trees and celebrated and quickly they threw everything in the back, jumped in and watched this bear that was only about a quarter of a mile behind them now.
“Hunter, drive!”
“Why? We are safe in here.”
Scar followed the scent trail all the way until he saw the odd blue in the forest. This very smart bear knew that was where his meal had gone to. The bear circled the truck. Hunter snapping as many pictures as he could, he noticed that the huge gash on the bears face was now a disgusting looking scab. The bear circled about three times, he reached the front of the truck backed up and slammed head first into it, shaking the truck and making a very loud thud. This bear was very mad at Hunter and Matt and it wanted to kill them so bad it would do anything to get into the truck. Finally this bear scared hunter enough that drove off leaving the bear in a daze standing in a cloud of dust, angered it could not get revenge on these humans, waiting for the next victims to come down his trail.
