Man sentenced for poaching from Rosebud reservation

PIERRE, S.D. A Clear Lake man has been sentenced in federal court in Pierre for transporting a deer that was illegally taken from the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.

Twenty-four-year-old Karie Joe Walker must pay a 500-dollar fine and one-thousand dollars in restitution to the tribe.

He also had to forfeit a Winchester .270-caliber rifle with scope and bipod, which will be turned over to the tribe.

Walker pleaded guilty to transport of wildlife taken in violation of Indian law for killing a trophy buck mule deer with a 29-inch spread last January.

its good to see that justice was served , but on a deer that size maybe the sentence should have been stiffer .

I agree about the sentence. I think that although the punishment was great, he should also serve time for it.

Don't most states have stiffer penalties for "trophy animals" which includes jail time?

AGC, I don't know if the crime taking place on tribal land or not has anything to do with it. I know Colorado has a "trophy" law but can't recall the name of it at the moment.
