Monster Buck Sited: Need some tips

Last weekend was opener in ND and I wasn't able to make it back home due to a football game. I will be going home this weekend. My brother in law had a huge six by six run across the road in front of him an hour before legal shooting time and lost track of him. This is an area of ND that doesn't have much cover. Not in the badlands, But there is a lot of farm land and tree rows around. Where should I focus to find this Monster? I've hunted Mule Deer all my life but there has never been deer in the area I am talking. Any help would be appreciated.

hey cobberqb;

sorry man, any advice i give would probably not be very accurate, as i am from wyoming and i am sure the landscape of wyoming is much different from north dakota, however i will give it a shot anyways. i guess if i was going to hunt this deer i would start by trying to figure out his trails, and his escape routes. pushing the trees and fields might be useful, however doing this you run the risk of pushing him clean out of the country. but if this deer feels comfortable where he is, then maybe he won't go far. as you probably know, it does not take much cover to hide a muley! they are pretty tricky and can conceal themselves in minimul coverage. so just because this area has not contained deer before, or at least from what you have seen, does not mean they have not been there all along. that is probably why this deer is hanging out here, he has been safe this long so he probably feels pretty safe now. the only probably is, is that your brother in law is onto him now. because he has been seen.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.. Any advice will help definitly.. Thats really why I asked, I grew up on the farm where this buck was spotted and well we've never had deer close tot he house. Could he have possibly just been passing through?? He had some does with him along with another 4*4.. I took that as a sign they really aren't in the rut yet, but they're really close to hitting it..

Hows the mule deer hunting in Wyoming anyways? I've always wanted to take a trip out there to Elk and Deer hunt? Where are the places I should look to go?

If you haven't bagged yours yet I wish you luck WYMULEYMAN!!

If you have "never" had deer that close then as sad as it may sound, he may just be passing through? Or Scared through. I've never hunted that type of country either. If he is in the area still, I'd assume he would be "holed up" in some wash area between fields or where there some possible tree cover in some wash? Don't know if it's at all possible to track him in your area, probably unlikely?
Good luck, be real cool if you jumped him again.

Talking to my dad he believes the deer is still in the area, but that also might be because he wants me to break the state record when I come home this weekend. What we've got in the area is a lot of old gravel pits between CRP and corn or stubble fields. Along with lots of good cover in creek bottoms along these fields, buffalo berry bushes and such. I was thinking about focusing on these areas. Where there is cover its not large and if hes around I think a good set of binoculars should be able to find a rack like that. Thanks for the help

Just a little advise if that deer has the corn field and the crp ground he will stick around I doubt he will stick in the trees he will most likely be clinging to that gravel pit.

He will be right there. I guided in country like that for years and even now go down and film deer in that type of country. I would guess that the deer is a resident deer that knows that country better than you know your own home. He will lay in the CRP and use any and all low spots for concealment. He will also probably lay tight until you damn near step on him. These deer are SMART! I would try to find a vantage point that offers a decent view of a lot of that country and glass all day. A mature buck will have to get up a couple of times a day to stretch and to relieve himself. Your window of opportunity for seeing him will be small but if you stay alert and find him then killing him will not be as difficult as you think. As I said earlier, he will probably stay in his bed until you are damn near on top of him. Where I guided on the eastern plains these deer would have almost white antlers because they had nothing to rub on out in the CRP. If you are persistant I think that you will be amazed at the numbers of deer that inhabit places you never thought they would. Good luck.
