It took me 10 yrs and 4 states to find one like that. His brow tines really are amazing. Here is a look from the other side. He was an absolute PIG!

I took a really nice bull last year too, but this guy is SOOOO big, you can take that other rack and rattle it around inside this PIG'S!

Ryan,

Thanks for joining and sharing another angle with us! I'll be honest I didn't know Idaho grew them that big. :)

What a BEAUTY!! I can't even imagine walking up on something that big, great job again!

Thanks, B.

Now I can focus on trying to find a 200 Inch Deer. That might be another goal that requires a decade of my time, but this is a labor of love. There is really nowhere else I would rather be come fall. There is nothing like the anticipation of the hunt and being surrounded by close friends and great people in camp. It is my favorite time of year!

Was this a public land bull? Just curious on the velvet still hanging on the antlers. :-k

What hunt/area was this where you could hunt in August? I wasn't aware Idaho had such early hunts.

Honest question Brett! I have hunted in Idaho many times myself. I have NEVER seen a mature bull with velvet still attached in September, thus the conclusion it was killed in AUGUST! If they have an early season I would like to know about it. Follow your own advice, and quit reading between the lines! I meant nothing more than just learning about different options in different states.

As far as i know, idaho only has 1 controlled hunt that starts aug. 31. so it couldve have been that hunt or an archery hunt!!

but like pro, thats the 1st thing that popped into my head till i looked at the regs.

was this an archery kill or rifle!!!!

Honest question Brett!

Fair enough, no harm no foul intended PRO! :thumb

I'm pretty sure this was RIFLE, not archery but hunter will confirm if he chooses. I highly doubt August, but again can't confirm.

And there isn't that much velvet is there?

I think that the velvet that you are seeing is just being stubborn. If you look at the rest of his antlers the velvet has been gone long enough to get his antlers to darken up. So that would lead me to belive that most of has been gone for awhile and he is hunting later in the year.

The first picture shows alot of velvet still hanging on his G5 on the right side, this is what makes me believe this bull was killed in August, and not the end of August either. Either way it is a very nice bull with big fronts.

we have the same dates here in oregon as idaho does and i've seen plenty of bulls in this same stage as this bull. i guided for 8 yrs in new mexico and are season didn't start till september first there and still....... same thing. haveing that LITTLE amount of velvet still hanging in september is nothing out of the ordinary at all. maybe it's different on the limited entry units , but not in any of the states i've hunted.

Although Idaho has a few controlled hunts that start in early August (Areas 11,31,32,39 open 01AUG and Area 54 opens 15AUG), these hunts are all antlerless...and this one is certainly NOT antlerless...LOL. Almost all other areas open around 30AUG. I may be wrong but I am not aware of any antlered hunts that begin earlier than that.

With that being said, I would agree with MM, a_bow_nut, and Killer. The Elk begin to shed thier velvet in various stages around early to mid August and we all know, they do not all begin or end the shed at the exact same time. I don't see enough velvet on this bull to suggest that he was taken earlier than the 30AUG opening either. (I do NOT think that anyone is making accusations either. Just honest questions).

another thing i just noticed is if you look at the leaves on the aspens they are deffinatly starting to change colors. most states i've hunted this is usually a september time of year. also, although givin the altitude and just variouse weather for any givin year, he is wearing some clothes that seem to say it is pretty chilly. usually in august, even in northern new mexico where are places were 10,000 ft. elevation, it did not get cold enough to be dressed like that. but once you started into september you would start seeing the temps drop. like i said you never know if just a cold front happend to move in, but it seem under most normal situations i would think this is the case...... just my 2 cents.

September 19th 2007 to be exact! I was just as surprised as you all to see velvet still on his 5th & 6th points. In fact, when I first glassed him up, he was standing there rubbing a tree. He had about 5 cows with him. But he wasn't in much of a hurry, he looked like he might have had a long night if you know what I mean, and I think you do!javascriptemoticon(':thumb')javascriptemoticon('4c')

His fronts were really well polished, but for some reason he wasn't using those top points to rub very much. The velvet was was barely hanging on, and beat up pretty bad.

I'm attaching to this post a bull that I shot only 2 weeks later than the Idaho Bull back in 2006. This guy looks like he rubbed off all his velvet back in July! He is obviously much smaller, but I hunted very hard for 9 days before finding him. So, he will always be a trophy to me. But you can really see the difference between the 2 bulls.

I have seen some great bulls taken in August before. Bucks & Bulls in Utah runs a good operation for real velvet bulls. I think they are absolutely beautiful in velvet.

Holy smoke Ryan! Another very nice bull!!

Hey, thanks for checking in and answering the questions regarding the velvet too. Like I stated earlier, they don't all shed at the same time!
