Montana mule deer units 300,325,327

I'm trying to plan a trip to Montana in 2010 to hunt mule deer. Going to try an draw unit 300, if not im going to hunt units 327 and 325. Has anyone hunted any of these units.

It's interesting that area 300 is general hunting except for Mule Deer bucks. What is it 40 permits? Not many for an area. Maybe a shortage of MD bucks? Maybe working on making 300 a trophy area? Anyway you'll need to draw a A tag before you can apply for a special buck permit. Good luck.

Yeah its hard going into a new unit with little time to scout. It looks like good country. I've talked to the biologist and know the migration pattern. Wondering if there is any real good bucks that come out of this part of the state. The biologist said theres a few. The Montana mule deer season goes so late in November that its hard not to be excited.

Wish I could help on the area. One thing, I bet it is some magnificent country. Continental divide country would sure be fun to get into. The long season in MT is great. I go for the opening week, usually scouting and some upland hunting. Later in the season there are fewer hunters and a better time to find the bucks. :thumb

I have seen a few good bucks come out of the 300 and 326 areas, very tough to get tags due to draw rates and even worse for the fact that extremely hard general elk season pressure in all of that area. Get your lungs in shape LIMA sits at 6500 feet and its all up hill from there. Some of the deer come off of private ranches (good luck getting permission). Wolf kills have dramatically decreased elk,deer and antelope along with over hunting in these areas. Just my 2 cents. I would not even try to draw these areas there are some others that consistently produce good deer.

Hey thanks for the tip. I know the Snowcrest range and Gravelly ranges get a ton of elk huntin pressure. Seems like i run into the same problems either a tough tag to draw or the game stays on private land. My home state of Idaho has some great MD hunts, put of course tags are hard to get. I've been trying for 10 years on a so so MD hunt. Idaho doesn't draw on a point system, so I may never draw a tag. I'm bound and determined to go out of state and hunt, but i'm having a hard time forking out money for 10-17 years to get enough points to draw a quality tag. I"m not picky. I'm looking for 150-170 class bucks. I"ve been fortunate enough to kill some really nice bulls, but my garage is full of small 3 and 4 point bucks. So back to the drawing board. I"ve found it really hard to go out of state and figure out were to hunt, so thanks for everyones input. Its priceless.

300 is the Lima Peaks - a trophy management unit... Rugged country - about 40,000 acres of backcountry. If you're not afraid to get out of your vehicle and throw on a pack or saddle up a horse this would be a great hunt... I've backpacked that area in the summer and glassed a few nice bucks in velvet.

The rut is productive, but I also value the first week of season if you can get up into high country and hunt the summer range before the snows hit. You might find bachelor groups in open basins at first light...
