Montrose colorado

Is anyone familiar with the Montrose area? My Dad bow hunted around there in early 70's . He' talked about it for years and I'd like to take him back this year for a hunting visit. He's probably not going to hunt but I'd like for him to show me around his old memorys. Is the area in the mountains around the all built up? Is there some good camping , hunting still around? I'm looking to archery deer hunt if I cant get drawn anywhere this year. I'm clueless about the area and not to sure about his memory of it.

Unit 62 for deer is a draw unit that takes at least one point to draw. Landowner tags for archery deer sell for between $500-$1000. Lots of camping spots on the national forest but there will be lots of company there also. Still lots of bucks, but most of the ranchers that would let you hunt for a small trespass fee back in the 70's lease out their ranches for high dollars now.

We hunted unit 68 last year. Weather didn't cooperate and there were no elk to be had. We didn't have any deer tags but did see a few. The state wildlife area was overrun but on national forest land we saw very few hunters.

From what some of the locals told us, the 2007/2008 winter was REAL bad in the area. The animals that could migrated out and those that couldn't didn't make it. It might take a few years to recover, though this past winter didn't help matters.

Thanks for the information. I have six points in Colorado but just put in for points this year. Do they still only take the number points needed to draw in that area, and leave you the balance of points in Colorado?

Unless point banking was put in place for this next five year plan you would lose all of your points. If I had that many points I would take him to unit 61 and tell him that we can make a new memory in this unit.Stop off in Montrose and eat a great steak at the Red Barn and then head on down the road to unit 61. Its a much better unit to spend that many points on in my opinion.

6X6 thanks for the info on the points banking. I'd hate to waste them on a 1 point draw area. Next year I'll have to get serious about a Colorado Mule deer hunt , reserch and apply for a good hunt. So far I've not drawn for any tags...this year may be a scouting /photo trip to Colorado/Utah.

Well IF you had priv land to hunt on around Montrose you could get your tags off the LEFTOVER list and not burn any points. Leftover tags neither use or accumulate points. I think the new rules let points pile up as loing as you buy a COlo hunt license of some kind every two yrs. If you make a mistake and miss on the third yr then your points are GONE.

Silver-tip there were leftover tags left for 62? I have 6 friends that didn't draw an archery tag for 62 in the regular draw. Do you mean landowner tag?

Silvertip it finally dawned on me what private land tags you were talking about. It's the private land tags down in the valley around Montrose. They have a pretty limited area that you can use them in, mostly the hay fields around the outskirts of the city. Good luck in finding a rancher to let you hunt.
