Mule Deer/Antelope Advice

I just found this site, and I'm hoping that you guys can give me some advice.

My buddies and I hunted for antelope in Wyoming in 2005. This was our first Western hunt. We were all able to take bucks, although I ended up killing one that was much smaller than I hoped (they look a lot bigger at 194 yards than they do up close #-o ). Anyway, I used a 243 with 100 gr bullets on this hunt and the combo worked flawlessly. We are going back this year, but we're also going to try for mule deer as well. My first of many questions is: Will my 7mm Rem Mag be a good choice for both deer and antelope with 139 gr bullets?

Thanks,
Gary

Absolutely!! :thumb
Your 7MM will be a great choice for longer range western hunting.
And good luck on your hunt, sounds fun!!

Quite honestly, the .243 could get the job done for either with no trouble, but the 7mm should be a great choice. Good luck!!

Beyond 200 yards the 7MAG will eclipse the 243 in flatness and downrange energy.I use the 7mag loaded with 150-160gr Barnes Triples shocks for everything we can hunt here in MT. :222

At 100 yards, how high do you guys recommend sighting in the 7mm? I was leaning toward 1.5 inches, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,

I sight in dead on at two hundred and check at one hundred to see where that puts me. Then I shoot it at three hundred and measure it. Ballistic tables will give you a good idea, but actual shooting will give you hard data.

2.5" high at 100 gets me zeroed at 200,then im 6" low at 300 yards. :222

Man, that's sounds like a lot of gun to me. Don't get wrong, it'll do the trick, but a 243 or a 270 will work just fine too. It's not the size of the gun, it's the placement of the bullet.............
