Mule Deer Hunting for dummies

Ok Guys, I need some quick help.

My little brother has never hunted mule deer before. I have with our
dad, but that was over 15 years ago. Our dad has passed on, and my
younger brother never had a chance to go hunting with him, so the lessons
I learned as a boy were never passed on to him.

He now has the opportunity to go on a mule deer hunt in our home
state of Texas and is asking me questions on how to hunt mule deer (vise
hunting texas white tails) and I'm looking for some quick pointers
to give him to help him out. I've passed on as much as I can remember,
but I know I've left some things out as it has been 15 years since I
have had the opportunity to hunt them myself.

He is used to hunting out of a blind,
sometimes over a feeder, and has no concept of what it will be like
having to stalk them or walk for miles and miles per day as I did when
I was growing up.

If anyone out there can do a quick, to the point, mule deer hunting
for dummies that I can give him, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jay Smith

smittygj,

Welcome,

Tough question you ask. :)

I don't know much of the terrain in Texas, but I imagine not a lot of mountains down that way.

For me the key to mulies in Utah simply depends on the terrain 1st and foremost. Some of the "easiest" or best methods are to have good vantage points for mule deer.

What is the layout of the land he is hunting?

I'd say...
1. Glass, glass, glass
2. Be patient (not sure what type of deer he is after?) Big, small, or anything with horns?
3. Depending on terrain. I'd say tell him to do the complete opposite of what he is used to. As far as hunting out of a stand, etc. This likely will not work unless they are in the rut and chasing does. Or if there is specific fields, trails, they are using on a regular basis.
4. Scout, Scout, Scout, (should be #1 on list)
5. Make a decision quick, and be ready for quick shot. Most big bucks won't give you a lot of opportunity for redemption or easy shots.
6. Get a good vantage point. Close the distance (make sure of wind factor)
7. Keep good cover, smell and movement will blow your cover instantly.
8. Running out of ideas, good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help. They will be hunting the "Marfa Plateau" not too
far from Alpine, texas. Baren landscape. Rocks, Yucca, grass, some
scrub brush, not a tree in sight...

Hills and valleys ranging from 1300 to 2200 ft.

supposedly they are to be able to get a 180 class deer from
this property, but that is yet to be seen.
