Mule Deer Rut

Im a veteran whitetail hunter, but a rookie mulie guy.

Im debating between mulies or whitetails this weekend (its a five hour trip to get into mulie country for me).

Halloween is of course the start of the best damn week of whitetail hunting up north here, what with the pre-rut starting to kick and bucks on the prowl.

Does the mulie rut follow the same rough timeline as the whitetail rut??? Ive read that mulies arent nearly as aggressive ruters as whitetails. Do they go on a frantic search for does like whitetails do?

Would my weekend be better served sittin in a tree?

Thanks for any insight into this.

The reason I ask is I was out in mid September and spotted a 160 class buck (which is a dynamite buck for the state). I had him at 67 yards but the wind had different plans for me.

Id like to get back on him. What are the odds he's in the same area?

I can only speak for where I hunt in CO but the rut doesn't start until the latter part of Nov. Hence the reason there are no buck tags after the third season.

And for where I live in MS, the rut for whitetails doesn't start down here until the end of Jan, beginning of Feb.

Yeah, our whitetail rut peaks right around Veterans Day. You guys have a long, strung out rut down south, ours is short and condensed.

Just wondering if the mulie rut coincides with whitetails.

bbj- I recognize your username from a local forum so I'm pretty certain you hunt the same area as I do. I have the same dillemma as you right now however I am opting to sit in the tree this week/weekend. Mulie rut usually runs a little later out there than whitetails here. I've found around Thanksgiving to be a pretty hot time to be out there. Only problem is when the bucks are rutting hard it is difficult as they don't stay in one place for very long and if they are bedded you'll probably have a lot of eyes to fool. Hope that helps a little bit.
