Mulie question.

Howdy everyone. Are there any good mulies in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area?

I have gone into the BOB a few times, mostly looking for Elk. I would say there are good Muleys, But the area is not known for trophy class deer.
I'd say a 24" 4 point would be a good deer for the area.

How bad are the griz? I never camped among them, and am a little antsy about it.

Well, It's a long story. My brother and I left food and leftovers laying around camp first time in the Bob. We had a visitor in the night, tore a hole in our tent. I tell my brother to this day I saved him from being brought home in a bag of Griz droppings. I had my rifle nearby, shot several times against the cliff we camped by, the bear left. In the morning all over were the largest bear tracks either of us ever seen. This is a true story. Did we ever go back into the Bob Marshall, yes quite a few times. But I don't believe I would spend the night without a rifle.

I've hunted the BOB too. Cool experience but if going after a monster Muley is your main objective, there are probably better places. I can say there are a good number of griz in there, I saw 2 in a week when I was in there, but they bailed the other direction as soon as they caught wind of us. Some of the people I talked to in the area said if you are in without horses and shoot an elk and have to make several trips to pack it out, it is virtually a sure thing a griz will be on the kill within a day or so. That is the bigger issue because once they claim a kill, the situation can get dicey trying to recover your meat.

The BOb is not really a trophy area,by the time the rut is on they have moved down out of the wilderness into the lower hills.

Thanks for the info guys. You are right about the trophy quality in the Bob. All the research I have done leads to that conclusion. I talked to an outfitter down in the Powder Horn region of Colorado. I am officially in the process of buying points for Mule Deer. If I am going to make one trip for trophy Mulie, it might as well be there. Maybe in 6 years or so, I can draw a tag. [-o< Such is the life of the trophy hunter. Gotta play by the rules they hand you.
