Muzzle Brake?

I have a couple of questions for you gun guys. I have a rifle with a ported barel, bought it used and I believe the guy that had it before took and had a gun smith drill it out to port it. There is not much kick to it (its a weatherby vangard 300 mag) but it has quite the bark to it. I shot my buddys 300 wsm today while shooting my mag and hte short mag has a muzzle brake on it as well but it is one that was put on. There is a considerbly less bark to the short mag.

My question is this. Is the less bark due to the caliber or the different type of brake on it?

Also what could you excpect to pay for a brake to be put on a rifle?

And last question. If your were going to put a brake on a rifle what kind would it be?

Thanks guys.

Noise from muzzle brakes depends alot on the design of the brake as well as your position relative to the brake. I have a brake on my 300 RUM that is not very bad from the shooting position, but if you are standing at an angle and behind the shooter on either side it feels like you are getting b-slapped across the face. I personally like the vaise brake for functionality and looks. I don't know about local pricing, but I know that bow_nut just got one installed on his 7mm RUM by a local smith and loves it.---------SS

Springville is right. For reducing the kick on my 7mm RUM that muzzle brake is awesome. It's gave that gun a heck of a bark though. I make sure to tell everybody when I'm going to shoot because I would like them to still be my friends when I'm done. When you redirect the energy of the gun you also redirect the noise so each gun will be different.

Here are some pictures of before and after.

+1 for both shoother and abownut.

I had one put on my 300 WSM and love the lack of recoil and hate the noise. Personally I shipped mine to a gun smith to do the work. It was cheaper for me to ship out of state (Utah) than to have it done locally. Mine has worked great and I am very happy with my choice. If you have any specific questions about mine shoot me a PM.

I'm looking for a pic of mine but not sure if I have one here in NC...

I had one put on my 270 WSM by a local gunsmith (nightowl gunsmith I think) and it works great! Cost about $150.

I shoot a 300 win, but I picked up this 270 for the kids. My 12 and 10 year old can shoot it without flinching. It's about twice the kick of a 22 now! NO KIDDING!

It not too loud if your pulling the trigger, but if you get off to the side of it, you're going to earn it.

Me and my buddies have this guy put a brake on every hunting rifle we get. Less flinch = better shot.

Depends on brake design & caliber.. KDF is fairly quiet compared to a lot of brakes.

I hate it everytime a guy sits next to me at the range with a muzzle brake. It might reduce recoil and flinch for him but it gives me a flinch. If I have my chrony out it really screws it up with the blast. I can't get good results because of it. So it's ok for the guy behind the gun but not for the guy next to him.

Defensive edge IMHO is the best one out there..side porting no radial where chit is blown everywhere when shooting prone

Brakes definitely make a difference in recoil and NOISE. I haven't had a lot of experience with them (None of my rifles have a brake), but I have shot a couple down at the local range. Pulling the trigger is fine, but if you're to the side, get ready for a blast. If you're out hunting, hearing protection is highly recommended when you take the shot.

I'm going to send mine into weatherby this year to get one put on.......They say my .300 weatherby will have it's recoil reduced down to the kick of a 30.06. I'm not to worryed about the noise, I'm half def anyways.......that's what the wife says :-$

I have a couple KDFs on some guns of mine.

My .300RUM kicks less than my son-in-law's lightweight .308Win! But holy CRAP is it loud. And if you are not directly behind the gun, it has some serious concussion.
My .270Win is easily shootable by my 10 year old daughter, but much louder than a stock rig.
