My First Colorado Hunt

A couple of years ago my brother, his boy, and I went to Colorado on a archery elk hunt. We were up in the primitive area just above a town called Pagosa Springs. As they say everybody gets lucky once in awhile.

One of the countryside.

And after a few day of chasing some success.

This is how I was able to catch up to him.

My bull compared to my brothers. Hey it's a start

All in all it was the best hunting trip that I've ever had. Got to spend time with my family doing what I love. Could a person ask for anything more?

Hiker,

Yes he did get that bull in Utah. He got a limited entry unit in central Utah called the Pahavant unit. That hunt was also one of the funest hunts that I've been on. To watch all of these great bulls running around in the rut going crazy was something to behold. When I get a chance I'll post some pictures unless treetop would like to.

Don't be fooled into thinking that there aren't any bulls that size in Colorado. We saw one that was easily ans big as his or even a tad bigger. They are just few and far between. My nephew and my brother worked on putting the sneak on him for two days but to no avail. I just poked around until I finaly got the in the pictures.

When we finaly got the elk down we checked the GPS and it said that we were at 12,000 feet. ???

I can tell you one thing at that height it sure is hard to catch your breath. Boy those elk sure like to live high over there. We kept looking for mountian goat or some sheep cause I know that they couldn't get much higher. We were only a few hundred feet from the peaks

Yes it was mostly downhill to get to the truck. The downside of it was that with a elk to pack out we had to walk the whole way out which turned out to be twelve miles. While the horses packed out the camp and the elk. We headed out that afternoon and made just over half way out before unrolling the sleeping bags for the night. We were to tired to set up camp we just layed out a tarp and the bags and passed out. The next day we made it back to the truck at about noonish and loaded everything up. We stopped off in Durango to get the meat into coolers and on ice. Then we hit the local Pizza Hut for dinner. I can tell you one thing when that food hit the table we were like a pride of lions that hadn't eaten for a couple of weeks and it was the best pizza that I've ever sank my teeth into. To this day I can still remember how good it was.

Bow Nut, I know we have a few big bulls in Colorado but not very many. Those wapiti like to get up as high as they can get, to get away from those pesky flies. As you are probably aware of, those flies love to torment the bulls when they're in velvet and those racks are soft and full of blood.
Thanks for sharing your story of your hunt. It brought back many memories. We use to go to a Pizza Hut in Avon, CO and do the same thing......Yummy! I use to go up for 10 + days or so and not leave the wilderness. I'd really get tuned in and forget about work, chores and get totally relaxed. Then I leave that quiet wilderness and coming home on I-70, I'd be like a scared 'Ole Lady, white knuckled, scared to death of all the cars flying by. I'd freak...for quite a few miles before I would get use to all of the commotion. ???
