My fist muzzy buck ( very very small )

Cody and I decided we would shoot the first legal buck we saw this year.
Little did i know i would get the chance within the first 20 minutes of opening morning . I left camp and went about 200 yard , then dropped down off the mountain another 100 yards to a clearing surrounded by Aspen . As i still hunted , i saw a few does feeding on the opposite side of the a meadow around 80 yards off . I decided to sit down and watch the area . A VERY small 2 x 2 :-$ stuck his head out by the does . I put the sight on the base of his neck dropping him in his tracks. This was the only buck we saw in three days. This was the first deer i have taken since i gave up rifle hunting in 1976 . I sure love the thrill of having only one shot and also the lack of crowds . :thumb Next year i hope to get a chance at taking a larger buck . :thumb I will be going again Saturday morning with Cody and hope he also has a chance to get his first muzzy buck !!

CONGRATS ROB!!!! Man, that is too cool. Regardless of his size, it's your first buck since '76...and a "one shot-one kill" harvest to boot!

I love the camp too. Man I can't wait for our season to start (two more weeks!). Regardless of whether I fill the tag or not, I get to "get away from it all" for a few days and enjoy myself!

Thanks !!

I guess i'm grazy becuase i just love my old tent . I bought it used at a
DI in fremont ca. around 16 years ago for 15.00 . It's very heavy , but i just love the smell of canvas , reminds me of the camping trips i went on as a child.

The first buck with any new weapon is exciting to me. I've sure learned a lot over the past few weeks.

Congrats and the buck, best of luck to your son.

Any YEP, nice looking camp! Thanks for sharing as usual. :thumb

Yea Rob, I thought the same thing. I'm in the middle of a three year Muley drought (Been able to temper that with my whitetail success though) and thought "I'm not going to be so picky this year and take the first legal buck I see."

Seeing the pics of great bucks from all the successful hunts this year has caused me to rethink that stance though. It's "three point or better" where I hunt so I have to at least bring home a buck with three points on one side but I may hold out yet again this year. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. It's never bothered me to come home without a deer....as long as I had fun tryin'. BUT, three years is a long time, dang it!

All these great bucks means I will have think really hard before pulling the trigger this year. DANG IF YOU GUYS HAVEN'T SET THE BAR HIGH THIS YEAR!!

With that being said, I wouldn't be ashamed of your first smokepole mule deer at all!

Your right , i barbecued some for dinner tonight and it had no gamey taste at ALL . It actually tasted better than the Elk we have , and i thought it was great . My wife has never has venison before and was very impressed .
