My hunting season is done.

Done for deer anyway. Got back from northern Wi last week with a couple of coolers full of meat. I was able to take a medium sized doe and a big bodied small racked 9 pointer. Will fill in all the details later, but here is a pick of the rack.

Ok, the story goes.

My father and I had been hunting an area called the Moquah Barrens in northern Wisconsin near Cornucopia. My dad had taken a buck and 2 does from this area and I had taken my doe from there also. We were getting kind of board of hunting this area, so we decided to head out to an area that we used to go all the time back when we lived in Cornucopia called “Brackets Corner” off of Hwy 13 outside of Port Wing Wi. There is a small dirt road that goes back to a clearing and an old unused atv trail that parallels the clearing, we had often taken dear out of this area in the past so we figured what the hay. We got all suited up and headed down the old unused trail to where it intersected with another trail that parallel the other edge of the clearing and on this corner there is a little pine grove that we had sat many a times. Well we get settled in and out of nowhere comes this dang red squirrel from the next tree over and starts squawking at us like crazy, so we figured if we stayed put he would go away… We were wrong, so after an hour of this squirrel yelling at us, and no deer, we decided to head out to the car and take a ride out to Iron River. We walk back out to the car get unsuited and are BSing and slamming the car doors and such. We get back in the car and had the guns all put up and such, and my dad is telling me of a time that we was in this same spot 15 years ago sitting in the car pointed down this road when a big doe stepped out onto the road and stood there for almost 5 minutes 50 yards away. Just as he finishes his story, my 9 pointer walks out, and we just look at each other like “what the…” so I reach back grab my .270 and a shell, and crack the door open and that deer just stops dead in his tracks and stares at the car… BOOM! My .270 barks and he runs about 30 yards and drops!

This is about 3 miles from where i took my big ten when i was 12.
