My son Got his first buck today.

My son is 12 years old. He shot this buck at first light this morning after asking me if we could play hooky for the day. He shot it perfectly in the boiler room with my open sight 30-30. He has never been overly excited about hunting until now. tonight he was already talking about where we will hunt next year. :1

congrats to your son.

I do have one question though, I thought that it wasn't until next seson that 12 year olds could hunt big game? Or were you in another state? Maybe some one can clear that one up for me. Thanks.

And again congrats to your boy.

It came out in an addendum in the antlerless proclamation this year. the rule is that all youth hunters under 14 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. I am all for the change and I will tell you why.

I have a fifteen year old daughter that used to be by my side constantly. She was my little sidekick that ALWAYS went hunting with me. She was excited to hunt for her first time. As the years went by she became more involved with her friends and less with dad. By the time she was fourteen she had lost the desire to hunt. If she could have gotten out when she was twelve she may have got the bug. Now she doesnt even want to try.

This is not the case every time but if the parent is responsible then a 12 year old kid is more than ready to start hunting. How many more kids would grow up into hunting if we could involve them before their lives get too busy? It is up to us to teach them and make sure that they are safe and ethical.

Thanks to all for the nice comments. I will let him read them. The first thing he said this morning was, "Dad I got a buck!"

Dad is on cloud nine and we have a memory together that will never fade. :thumb

Nice job taylor. Congrats to you on a fine buck.

Thanks for the update, I knew it was coming and I am okay with 12 year olds hunting, I just thought it was next year that it went into effect. Is it posted online somewhere. I guess I will go look at the antlerless proc. Which brings up a completly differnet question, why would they put it in the antlerless, is it somewhere else, online maybe. Makes me mad that I didn't know this year becase my brother is 13 and could have carried a tag. :>/
