Nebraska Ranch to hunt

I am looking for private land to hunt in the Pine Ridge area of Nebrasksa. My Son and I are planning a hunt in this area. Any contacts would be appreciated.

There is plenty of public land in the NW corner. If you are going out archery hunting you will not see very many people. I dont know about rifle season.

We are heading back out this fall for the last week of archery season and the first few days of rifle.

Most of the more mountinous areas that hold the muleys are open to the public.

Thank you both for your reply. Yes my Son and I will be hunting during rifle season. I have heard their could be a lot of Orange on the public land during rifle season. That is why I was considerigd private land as an option. What are your opinions?

Thank you both for your responses. They are much appreciated.

I am sure there are ranches in the area that would allow you hunt their property for a fee. I know that if you are willing to walk, you can get away from the crowds in the Pine Ridge area. I talked to several locals who had killed some nice bucks, and they all pretty much had the same thing to say, just get away from the roads.

Have you been out there before?

Thank you again for your reply. No we have not been out their. We do have maps of the public hunting areas. If you are saying to get back into the areas that in itself is a help. Do you recommend a GPS? Keep in mind we are from Ohio and as you know Whitetail hunting out here is much different (hard to get lost). Any other tips would be appreciated.

A GPS is definately recommended. It easy to get turned around in the canyons and ridges. I dont think I would hunt there with out a gps and maps of the areas. As far as recommendation go. Definately call the dnr, game commsion, whatever it is called in NE. These guys will tell you alot of info. If I can find our contact info, I will pm you with it. We talked to the guy that tracks the bighorn sheep in the area and he was a huge help.

When we hunted the pine ridge area, we just found a high point where we could watch some meadows, but is very hard to bed deer here as the woods are pretty thick. We also saw alot more whitetails in the pine ridge area.

Where are you guys staying?

Thank you for your input. We are staying at Fort Robinson State park for the first 4 nights. Then Chadron the last 4 nights since Ft Robinson is booked. I was told that both Pondersa and Big Horn Wildlife area could be productive, but I am not sure. Are you hunting Soldier Creek Wilderness area?

Thanks again.

We are also staying at Ft. Robinson. That is where we stayed last year. Are you staying in a cabin or in the hotel/dorms?

We hunted around Bighorn last year, and also hunted Solidier creek and Peterson. WE only hunted solider creek one evening, but saw alot of deer.

PM your email and I will shoot you some pictures.

We are staying in the old Officers Quarters at Fort Robinson. Do you think the Soldier Wilderness area is our best bet? It sounds like you hunted a number of Public areas.

Thanks again!

We are staying there also. We will be getting in on the 7th and leaving on the 15th or 16th.

We hunted the Pine Ridge area, which includes Bighorn WMA and a few others. This area is just as it sounds, lots of ridges and canyons covered with pines.

We also hunted Ft. Robinson, Solider Creek, and Peterson. These areas are more open. Solider Creek is fairly good sized.

I have also heard good things about Gilbert-Baker WMA out around Harrison.

I sent you a pm.
