Need advice on a scope. HELP!

I am currently trying to decide on what power scope to get. I currently live in the heart of big whitetail country and have finally saved up enough to go on a mule deer hunt. I am planning on taking my .06 but need to get a more powerful scope than I have. Ive been looking at 4.5-14 and also 6.5-20 but I am not sure which one will be best since I dont live out west and dont hunt mule deer. Anyone know what will be the best? I am guessing average shots range from 150-300 yards so I want a scope that zooms in nicely at the 300 yard mark. Im looking for advice from some of you true west mule deer hunters. THANKS!!

The 4.5 to 14 should work great for you :thumb

What do you currently have on your .06? I'd say that 100-300 yards is a good average range for what you could expect. In that case a 3x9 should be plently. I don't see the need for anything more than 9 power until you set up a long range shooter.

I think the 4.5-14 is plenty. The 20x scope starts to get a little heavy, and you need a larger objective to get enough light at that magnification.

Hundreds of thousands of mulies have been taken with 3 and 4 fixed power scopes and the scope that has taken the most mulies would certainly be a 3-9 power; I think 20x could be overkill, but fine too. I don't think you need to spend all of that extra money, seems like 4-12 is getting to be the new standard.

Yeah I have hunted out west my whole life and have never had anything over a 3x9 for my big game rifles. I do a lot of coyote hunting though and its nice to have some extra power every noe and then. I would say the smaller of the 2 you listed.

I think a 3X9 would work great. I used 2X7s for years and still recommend them. I always carry them on the lowest setting and use the higher powers for long shooting or when I have time to set up. The 2X7 is a lighter and smaller and easier to carry all day. You can not go wrong with a Leupold.
