Need advice Texas or WY

I am currently looking at taking my son on a guided gun hunt for some Mule deer. The two places I am considering are Trans Pecos region of Texas and the Thunder Basin of Eastern Wyoming.

Should I be concerned about the severe drought in Texas. How would it effect my hunt this fall if it exist?

The second option in WY, the outfitter said additional permits are available that the can buy and I would stay in a hotel in Wright WY. Is this a good place to hunt Mules in WY? What size deer can I expect?

Thanks

Larry, I used to outfit/guide in SW Texas and I've lived my whole adult life in Wyoming. There are some decent mule deer in trans Pecos Texas, but they are the desert subspecies so they don't usually get as big as Wyoming mule deer. That said, a well-managed place in Texas will have bigger bucks than a poorly managed place in Wyoming. The country around Wright has some respectable deer, but it depends upon which ranch you are hunting and the management in place at that location.

And the drought and fires could defitely have an impact in Texas. Good hunting whatever you decide. You can have a great trip to either location. You'll see deer and have fun either way.

I would head to Wyoming. Better chance for a nice trophy. There has been so many fires and drought that has adversely affected the deer population this year, it will be a down year. Now next year if we can get some rains and the new growth and forage comes back, there will be some dandy's killed.
