New camera

Lets pretend a guy had $1000 to spend on a camera, this "guy" has no real experience with anything other than point and shoot cameras, he want's to take pics of wildlife and maybe some family portaits. Anyone have any suggestions? I realize thats not alot of money when we're talking about good stuff but it's a good start. Thanks.

I was looking at costco at the Rebel xt the other day for $799. I was itchin to buy it myself.
I'd get some advice from Brett or Utahrob or some of the other more experienced photography guys on here but they seem to agree the rebel is a good camera. I think its what Brett uses.
Most of the guys have posts on what camera they use, and then you can see the kind of pictures they post on here.. That's what I've been doing. .

I'd go with this...

1. Canon EOS 30D - $1,000 bucks

or this...

2. Nikon D40X - $700.00 bucks

3. Nikon D200 - $1300.00 bucks

still havent been able to pry my wallet apart to buy a camera but have been seriously thinking about the Olympus E500. It seems like a good camera for the price, around 600 bucks for the body and 2 lenses, anyone know anything about it?

It gets really good reviews. Never used on myself...

I've been looking into the same cameras. I'm leaning towards the
Nikon d80. From all I've read a cheaper body and more expensive lens is way better than a expensive body and cheap lens.

You may want to move the post over to the photography forum? A lot of ppl over there.

This link is a review of the nikon d80 vs d200. but the site has tons of info.

Thanks guys. I bought it last night and am going to try and break it in today, it seems pretty simple to operate. Inkleys has it for $699 and they give you 18 photography courses (a $270 value). maybe I'll have some pics to post later.
