New Mexico 2009-10

New member here and an avid bowhunter from New mexico. Love the site and all the great information everyone has to offer. 2009-10 application deadline is coming up and am looking for some new country to hunt in New Mexico. Primarly hunt in two units but looking for some alternatives with good deer numbers and was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction. Not looking for someones hunny hole just a quality unit in NM. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and glad to be a member!

You might want to look into the east side of 36 "Three rivers canyon" there is a camp host named Jon who without a doubt pointed me in the right direction (I have his contact info). I backpacked in from the trail head, saw big bucks. I went the first of year, bucks were a little to low boardering private. There is a hunt earlier in the year where you might have a better chance at those hoggs I saw.

What are the application dates for NM? Is it different than the regular application if I just put in for bonus points? I've been thinking about starting to build up points down there.

New mexico is strictly the luck of the draw. We do not run off of a point system like many other western states. 78% of the tags go to residents, 12% to non-residents with a guide, and 10% for DIY out-of-staters. Its either a go or a no-go here in New Mexico. The deadline to apply is april 8th for deer, elk, and a few other big game species. Go to http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us and click on the hunting link for all the info.

I own land in NM but I,m not a resident. My property is in unit 4. I've put in for a muley tag the last ten years in a row. Noluck on mulelys. By law you can't hunt your own land in unit 4 except by special draw resident or not. There are some monsters in Sargents and the Chama WMA. I've watched a few of them grow up. As a resident, what do you think about them splitting the elk bow seasons in all units? I think they are greedy SOBS and that putting up to 400 people in a unit in four weeks insted of 1 or 200 is going to really screw up a good thing. I would not be suprized if NM doesn't go the bonus point way in a year or two. Anyway let know how you do this season good luck.

I personally am not a big fan of the D&F splitting up every elk bowhunt into two or even three seasons throughout the state. The early part of September is slow with rut activity and the longer seasons at least let us get into some of the peak rut action. Now you have to apply for pre-rut or rut hunts and hopefully draw one with either bugling bulls or slow to non-existant activity. Luck of the draw I guess. As for the point system, I dont see NM going that direction at least I hope. It is truely luck of the draw here and I enjoy that part.

Howdy, I hunted in Pecos Wilderness area in 2006 and took a good muley with my muzzleloader. Went back in 07 first rifle season and never seen a buck, quite a difference from my previous hunt. I applied for unit 5 this year, west of the reservation. Do you know anything about this country. Good hunting

Curious to know if you were drawn for a hunt this year, NMBOWHUNTR. I'll be on two archery hunts this year: Elk in Unit 9 and mule deer in Unit 13. Not my top choices, but I'm thankful to have been drawn given our draw system here in New Mexico. My sons-in-law and I are DIY hunters on public land. Any advice you have on these two hunts would be appreciated.
