New Mexico 2B Help??

Hey boys! New user here. Thought I would give this a try as work has prevented any preseason scouting for me. I have a 2B New Mex deer tag starting Saturday Oct 25. I'm from northern AZ and this is my first time hunting out of state since I cannot seem to draw at home. I'm sure no one is going to give up any honey holes, but if anyone would give a guy some advice as to the right direction, it would certainly be appreciated.

Try hunting Laguna Seca Draw and Banco wash. Also Look for sage flats that are behind the locked oil field gates. Park and walk in...the further the better. The oil well roads that lead to the wells are locked with only access by the oil field workers so this will make access more difficult and the hunting better. There is a sage flat above navojo lake that I found a lot of good deer.

Need some heavy snow to push the deer in from colorado.

Plan on camping by tent or camper as the ride in on the dirt road is a long ways.

Peace.

I hope to hunt there again if i can ever draw. The later season is better.

The information I gave in the previouls response was when I hunted the november hunt. It was cold ans snowy. Those areas are lower pinion/sage country. If it is still warm I would hunt on the border of the Jicarilla Reservation and camp at the Buzzard Park Camp ground. Call the BLM to get a map of the area and these places are on it.

Just got back. What wonderful camping weather, but crap hunting weather. It was 70-75 degrees everyday. The deer were bedded down by 8am and didn't get up to move until about 1-2 hours before sunset. We saw ALOT of deer, but no good bucks. The largest was opening morning and someone must've bumped him because he ran across the road in front of us at noon. He was probably 160's. My cousin got a shot at him, but missed.

We camped in the southeast corner of the unit, not far from Cedar Springs camp ground. There were a total of four of us and we always split up and tried something different each night until we found something consistent. I spent numerous hours glasssing canyons, to the point that I became so frustrated that I figured if anything was hiding down there then I was going to scare it out by rolling rocks. Only two does came out.

I cannot say much about the north part of the unit as we didn't hunt there just because of the shear number of people up there.(Caracass Mesa area). The last two days of the hunt, we found a good spot where we were seeing 30+ deer in just a morning or evening hunt, but no good bucks.

Hopefully you guys with the later hunt will catch a break in the weather to get the migration started. Good luck.

Sounds like a tough and frustrating hunt. I wish it went better for you and your friends. The weather, right now here in Colorado is pretty hot and dry too. Thanks for letting us know.
