Brett, They are in southern NM, right on the Mexico border. Some of the roughest mountains in the lower 48.

Can you believe the ease of which they can climb shear rock faces?

Wonderful animal, I would love to hunt them.

Cool clip!

Talk about footing. Holy crap they can climb.
I was hoping to see the kill shot though.

That would be one interesting animal to hunt! Challenging for sure!
Maybe I'll have to put them on my "wish list."

Bigbuck92, they are not native to North America. The Ibex (Or Steinbock) are originally from Eurasia and Africa. There are three different species of Ibex and I BELIEVE the ones in NM are Asian Ibex (I am not 100% positive on this though).

so how did they get here. did people ship them over from there?

Bigbuck92,

In 1970 the Department of Game and Fish introduced 15 Ibex from Iran (I was correct, they ARE Asian Ibex) into the Florida Range. Another 27 were introduced a short time later.
The last census on them that I can find have the count at over 350 Ibex living in the Florida Mountains.

o thats cool. i was just hoping they werent pen raised

Nope, they are free-ranging, wild Ibex. No pen or high fence here (I would doubt that there would be any kind of high fenced operation in those mountains! Just as Hiker pointed out, the Florida Range is some rough, steep, and unforgiving country).

New Mexico also introduced two other exotic species some years ago, that are now in huntable numbers. They are the barbary sheep (aka audad) and Oryx (aka gemsbok). On my New Mexico antelope hunt earlier this fall, we saw oryx on a number of occasions, both on scouting trips and during the hunt. They are beautiful animals.

Agreed, all are beautiful animals and I would love to hunt any of them. They are pricey, but it beat heading half-way around the world to get one.

Someday---someday.
