Hello guys, my name is Devan and I'm from Indiana. I'm an avid Whitetail guy that is wanting to plan a trip for a mule deer hunt in the fall of 09. I have family that lives in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada around Auburn California. My uncle and his son's alway's manage to tag large blacktails. I've been considering this since it would be a low budget type deal to get my feet wet. Money really isn't a issue though.
I guess what I'm getting at is that I really don't have any idea how to start planning this. I would really like to go on a muley hunt with the chance of bagging a decent 20" plus buck. Does anybody have any advice on where I could have luck on public land. And if that's not a good idea maybe you could recommend an outfitter. I don't really care which state it's in as long as my odd's are pretty good. Whitetails are a great deer to hunt, but where I'm from the hunting pressure is getting out of hand. My grandfather has 80 acres with alot of great bucks, but now I find myself wanting a chance to get a really big rack. Everthing I've looked at say's mule deer get much bigger and wider on average than whitetails(Is this true). Well anyway's help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Devan Dotson

I noticed you mentioned Auburn Ca You are right they do have very nice blacktail there. I think your best bet would be to start learning the draw process for CA X-zones etc,,. As for getting your feet wet no better place to start than nice blacktail with the uncle. I have family and friends that live a Placerville & Coloma right by Auburn I'll put out some feelers for info re: outfitters.
