16A is a great area; you will need to do your homework on this area. From Reserve NM find CR 436, travel about 12-15 miles out that road and that will put you in the middle of some great ELK hunting. Or try the southern part of the unit by the Gila.

Thanks so much for the info. I will do my homework, and I know I've got plenty to do. I'm from North Carolina so any actual scouting is out of the question. But I will have the maps and talk to as many people as I can.

Hey Tommy how are you doing. Which hunt date did you draw in unit 16A. Alot of big bull in that unit this year. welcome! dont know the area ...have you hunted elk before? if not ,if you can afford a guide it may be smart to do so. if you have, it still might be a good idea,without kowing the area and no scouting possible. anyway you go your in for some tuff and fun hunting good luck, and keep us informed!

You may be on you way to NM or already here. Not sure which hunt you drew for 16a. If your still around, I will be hunting 16a Sept 19th through the 24th. I hunted there last year and took a 350 class bull on the last day of the hunt...whew! This area has plenty of elk, one of the best units in the state. I would start around the Snow Lake area and work your way back towards Reserve NM. Not far from Snow Lake you'll see a burn area that holds plenty of elk. After the burn a fews years back, the BLM planted barley in many parts of that area.
