NM unit 15

I drew a first season muzzy elk tag for the unit and was just wondering if any of you guys out there have had any experiences with this area or any pics of bulls taken off the unit from past hunts. Was also wondering if it would pay to get a bear tag- is there a high concentration of bears in the unit? Also, can anyone recommend a place to get a map that might show public vs. private land ownership boundaries in NM? Not topo maps. Thanks.

google BLM and you should be able to order blm maps online. I ordered some yesterday from WY and it worked great. The BLM maps will show Private vs. Public.

Hey backpacker,

I have hunted this unit a couple of times. you had better have your legs under you when you get there. It is a lot of up and down up and down.I also drew this unit this year for the second hunt archery. I dont think there are very many bears in unit though. Also, you can go to this link http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/recreation/hunting/unitmaps/2006/high_res/GMU15.pdf

Hope this helps. There are some good bulls in this unit. Hard huntin though

Thanks guys. I've been debating on whether or not I should go down there to do some scouting for a maybe a long weekend before October or just go down 3-5 days before the season as I think some of the prior hunts may push the animals to different areas. I've been doing quite a bit of jogging to build up the endurance but I'll have to kick up the stairmaster a bit. Good luck Bowfisher, let me know how you end up doing.
