Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban

Obama to Seek New Assault Weapons Ban
Previous Ban Expired in 2004 During the Bush Administration
By JASON RYAN
WASHINGTON, Feb. 25, 2009—

The Obama administration will seek to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 during the Bush administration, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.

"As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons," Holder told reporters.

Holder said that putting the ban back in place would not only be a positive move by the United States, it would help cut down on the flow of guns going across the border into Mexico, which is struggling with heavy violence among drug cartels along the border.

"I think that will have a positive impact in Mexico, at a minimum." Holder said at a news conference on the arrest of more than 700 people in a drug enforcement crackdown on Mexican drug cartels operating in the U.S.

Mexican government officials have complained that the availability of sophisticated guns from the United States have emboldened drug traffickers to fight over access routes into the U.S.

A State Department travel warning issued Feb. 20, 2009, reflected government concerns about the violence.

"Some recent Mexican army and police confrontations with drug cartels have resembled small-unit combat, with cartels employing automatic weapons and grenades," the warning said. "Large firefights have taken place in many towns and cities across Mexico, but most recently in northern Mexico, including Tijuana, Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juarez."

At the news conference today, Holder described his discussions with his Mexican counterpart about the recent spike in violence.

"I met yesterday with Attorney General Medina Mora of Mexico, and we discussed the unprecedented levels of violence his country is facing because of their enforcement efforts," he said.

Holder declined to offer any time frame for the reimplementation of the assault weapons ban, however.

"It's something, as I said, that the president talked about during the campaign," he said. "There are obviously a number of things that are -- that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so, I'm not sure exactly what the sequencing will be."

In a brief interview with ABC News, Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, said, "I think there are a lot of Democrats on Capitol Hill cringing at Eric Holder's comments right now."

During his confirmation hearing, Holder told the Senate Judiciary Committee about other gun control measures the Obama administration may consider.

"I think closing the gun show loophole, the banning of cop-killer bullets and I also think that making the assault weapons ban permanent, would be something that would be permitted under Heller," Holder said, referring to the Supreme Court ruling in Washington, D.C. v. Heller, which asserted the Second Amendment as an individual's right to own a weapon.

The Assault Weapons Ban signed into law by President Clinton in 1994 banned 19 types of semi-automatic military-style guns and ammunition clips with more than 10 rounds.

"A semi-automatic is a quintessential self-defense firearm owned by American citizens in this country," LaPierre said. "I think it is clearly covered under Heller and it's clearly, I think, protected by the Constitution."

So ummm why on earth do these stick up the butt bureaucrats keep thinking that the legal sale of firearms is the only way the bad guys get guns? If the bad guy wants an M16 then he's going to find an M16. If he wants to buy an RPG then he's going to find an RPG. It doesnt matter what laws are put in place, if these guys cared about laws then they wouldnt be doing what they are doing to be in need of the assault rifles in the first place. Seems like we could be a whole lot more useful if we'd put that effort and money into defending our border with Mexico. Give some of those assault rifles to the border patrol and actually give them permission to use them. I just get so tired of the everyday average US citizen being punished because of the actions of a few. Forget about what me and 99% of Americans have in our gun safes and are buying from the local gun shops. Worry about what is happening in the dark parking lots and back alleys at 2:00am. Worry about the guns that are coming into this country illegally and being sold on the black market. You want to take the guns out of the drug dealers hands then go after them and leave me and my rights alone.

I think it's like with the TSA at airports. If they make life difficult for law abiding people, the law abiding people think that the criminals are having a hard time too. Nothing is further from the truth. The Mexican government is claiming that the drug cartels aren't in contol of Mexico and that the rumors that they are about to take over soon are false. From what I've learned living here on the border these claims tell me the real situation is very desperate. There are at least 50,000 armed ready to go cartel members and they constantly beat up on and kill cops and soldiers. I will assume they take weapons whenever they please. Phoenix has the second highest kidnapping and strong armed breakin rate in the world because of these people. Knowing that lots of us are arming ourselves only keeps it down to a dull roar. Disarming us only makes us easy prey. The cops will come to investigate the crime. And pick up your body and put it in a bag. The only worse thing is to be alive and taken away for ransom. They are spreading out too to other cities. The new U.S.attorney general telling they captured 700 last year is embarrassing at best. Only 49,300 to go. Good job guys!! :thumb Looks like we'll need to clean up the rest.

I heard Glenn Beck talking about that the other day on his radio program Gardner. These drug runners lose their drugs whether it be to the law or to other drug runners and then they are responsible for paying the $$ back to the drug cartel. The way they do that is by kidnapping some unsuspecting American and demand a ransom be paid.

I have no problem with anyone coming into this country legally, but to these people running drugs across the border in the darkness of night I say OPEN SEASON. They do it because they know they can get away with it. If we had a backbone and actually defended our southern border with force and let them know we mean business then the battle could stay on the border, but the way we are doing it, or not doing it, brings the battle well across the border and into our cities and towns.

The problem with open season is that everytime you hurt or frighten an illegal lately the judge in civil court awards them cash to take back with them when they are deported. #-o I know one guy personally, who shot and crippled a criminal who had hit him in the head with a peice of angle iron when he walked out to his shed. We carry concealed here regularly now. The criminal got $30,000 a year for maintainance for life. No criminal charges were even filed against my friend, it was self defense!! ](*,) In a recent case a rancher in southern Az got tired of the illegals coming across his land and decided to herd up the next 18 and hold them for ICE. He had criminal charges filed against him and they were dropped in court but the judge awarded the illegals $78,000 for mental anguish! I guess he kicked 2 of them while herding them up. Probably because of the language barrier. :>/ Pretty scary stuff. Now no one dares to touch them for fear of losing everything. But Obama's taking care of that. Some of us have nothing to lose anymore. No house, no job, no 401K, no retirement. Things may change.
