VERY NICE! Looks as if the one still has a little velvet on it. I LOVE the multiple eye guards too.

I'm pretty sure this buck was a stag. There is still velvet on the horns.

Awesome set! Sure looks like he has some stag qualities....especially with those bases....are the horns really light in weight?

just making sure are we talking about the same thing when we are saying STAGS and CACTUS BUCKS??

AGCHAWK
Chet is correct...as least as far as I know (I am admittedly not the sharpest tool in the shed).

Yea, as far as we go here cactus bucks are stags (As you know, a male deer of certain species are also refered to as a stag). Stag is also a word refering to a male that has been "castrated" or injured in such a way as to have issues when it comes to regulating testosteron levels.

don't know if you can see very well in picture, but the base of the horns are starting to curve out. This meaning the buck definitely has the stag thing going on. Normal sheds at the base will be curved in where the horns come off the head.

Interesting, I did notice that...but didn't know why or the reason. Cool, learned something.

I am no expert but since most "stags" or "cactus" buck's antlers do not calcify or harden due to the lack of testosterone and low levels of other chemicals needed to harden, :-k I would bet the buck was or is just very old. Also young bucks have a convex >) shape to them when they drop or shed and older bucks will have a concave > ( shape to them when they drop. In some cases when a buck gets old he looses the desire to look good for the ladies and does not try to get rid of all of his velvet, also caused by lower levels of testosterone but at a different stage of antler growth.

Shed Crazy

Well said, good points.

the reason for this buck was a testicular injury that messed his horns up. He wasn't a full stag and still had his male parts, but a old wound was there probably effecting the testosterone levels what you say makes a lot of sense about these sheds. thanks for the info Shed Crazy

I dont think those are sheds they look cut off, deer dont shed smooth horned! theres no growth stem! :-k

huntenfever
I promise those are sheds. They where found back when i was in High school a lot of the local kids there chased this buck for many years. Probably no growth stem due to all the testosterone issues. If you look at the base close you can tell from this picture that they have a shape of concave ( also if you look closely you can for sure tell they are not cut.
