OREGON MULE DEER QUESTION
FORKHUNTER

I am new to Oregon coming from Montana. I have hunted the state for mule deer once before in the Malhuer Unit a few years back. Any suggestions on where to look and/or where to apply? Don't mind tough country, but like to hunt public lands and see a few deer. Been applying in the Trout Creek Mtns, but would like to eventually look at something I could draw more regularly.
Any suggestions? Also new to the site.

Don't know anything about Oregon or I'd help you out. Hope someone around here does. Just wanted to welcome you to MuleyMadness, thanks for joining and hope you enjoy.
I TOO HAVE RELOCATED TO OREGON, ONLY FROM IDAHO. AS FAR AS YOUR QUESTION TOWARDS HUNTING MULEDEER IN OREGON, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THE BEST UNITS WILL TAKE YOU EVERY 4 YEARS OR MORE TO DRAW. THE VERY BEST WILL TAKE YOU CLOSER TO 12 OR 13 YEARS TO DRAW. IF YOU ONLY HUNT WITH A RIFLE, I WOULD HIGHLY SUGGEST GETTING INTO ARCHERY HUNTING. YOU CAN HUNT MOST OF THE UNITS THAT YOU HAVE TO DRAW FOR RIFLE. ALSO, I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT THE STATE OF OREGON FEELS WE ONLY NEED 10 DAYS EVERY YEAR TO HUNT MULE DEER. THOSE 10 DAYS WILL ALWAYS BE THE FIRST FULL WEEK AND A HALF OF OCTOBER. IT IS USUALLY HOT AND DRY. SO DRAWING A RIFLE TAG DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL HAVE A DECENT CHANCE AT A QUALITY BUCK. THE ARCHERY SEASON GIVES YOU ALL OF SEPTEMBER, AND IN THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE STATE YOU CAN HUNT BLACKTAIL DURING THE RUT IN NOVEMBER. SO YOU GET 2 FULL MONTHS OF HUNTING DEER. I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME IN THE STEENS, THE TROUT CREEK MTNS, BEULAH, AND MALHEUR RIVER. MOST OF THE TIME I SPEND IS IN EARLY SUMMER, AND EARLY TO MID DECEMBER. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF DEER IN ALL UNITS, BUT I'LL BE HONEST. I HAVE YET TO SEE ANY REAL JAW DROPPING MONSTERS. THE BEST DEER YOU'LL SEE IN THIS STATE OUR LIVING ON THE MALHUER WILDLIFE REFUGE SOUTH OF BURNS. HEAD THERE ANYTIME OF THE YEAR FOR A GREAT SHOW. SOME REALLY NICE BUCKS. BUT YOU CAN NOT HUNT THEM ON THE REFUGE.
GOOD LUCK, AND WELCOME TO OREGON.

Will continue my quest. Trying to find an area to hunt is half the fun!!!!!
Come to thinkof it, you might try the East Biggs unit. Rugged and remote back there. Indians bought out the old Cherry Creek Ranch on the east side of the John Day River and it's open to hunting. But first ya gotta draw a tag!
Think I'm gonna hunt the Cascades this year with my son.
Public land is scrace in the unit and for the most part people are not as friendly as other places in the state. Deer aren't given chances to mature either. But for around $1000 you can buy your way on a ranch.
What hunt are you putting in for that takes 5 points? Anything around Antelope is easy pickings.
