I would avoid all of the outfitters in Montana if I were you guys, before they came a (majority are from out of state, and know nothing about the area, wildlife, or people) we could just go to a ranchers house, ask permission, and hunt the same lands that you have to pay WAY TO MUCH MONEY FOR! for free. If they didnt make any money, and all went back to their own state, we could do that again, wishfull thinking, but it will never happen :) I will get you a monster muley, or a bull elk on public land for a case of beer and gas :))

Are you putting in for the combo tag?I dont hunt WT unless Im filling a doe tag, most of the huge bucks I have seen came from north west corner of the state but we have WT everywhere.

Our WT are in full rut by the 3rd week of the season in my area, eastern MT holds lots of WT but i have no idea what access would be lik in the river bottom areas.

The access is pretty limited on the eastern side, but what there is is hunted VERY hard. Most of the decent hunting is on Block managment. but trying to get on it is rough. Most locals lock it up all season with friends and family. I'm a local and I have a hard time. I stick to private mostly. A lot eassier being told "no "than being told" no it's Full till the end of season".

You better do some serious homework before you come up,research the BM books and PRE OBTAIN your permision slips so you dont show up and find out the area is reserved or booked,BM can be a joke depending on the rules set up by the individual landowners, trust me.

I always hunt WT in the North around Lake Elwell/Tiber Dam. It is super easy to get onto private land up there because it is mostly CRP. But you really have to watch where you are at, because it is super flat with wheat fields everywhere, and they all look the same, its really easy to get on the wrong land. There are some huge WTs in the area, the biggest WT buck I have ever seen was south of the town of Chester on some CRP. Anything on, or near the Marias River, or Lake Elwell is awsome. The shots up there are sometimes a bit longer than your usual WT shots, because of the huge wheat fields, but I have lived in Montana all of my life and I still think that this area is the best in the state for WT. Good Luck
