Paunsaugunt Archery!!

After 9 long years, I finally got my tag! I'm totally stoked about hunting in the land of the giants. Whether the Pauns is down or not, it's still a spot where a guy could get get an absolute toad. I live in Northern CA and plan on heading down there around the end of July for a scouting trip and back again a week or so before the season. I'll have around 10 days to hunt, so hopefully this is all enough to find the bucks.

I've never been there before, so if anyone has any information on where to start or what to expect, I would totally appreciate it.
Thanks,
Duck

You have my dream tag. :)

I spend quite a bit of time there, actually LOTS. :)

Find bucks all the time, some big and some not so big. :thumb

I'll give you a few ideas and keep you posted as to what I think. I don't start looking much until about the middle of July though.

Thanks for the posts and pics guys. I had 9 pts. so I figure that I must have drawn the bonus point tag rather than the random. Either way, I'm pretty amped up about finally getting to hunt down there. My dad has 12 non-res pts. so he will be checking things out for a possible future hunt for him.

I will give you this. don't get discouraged to quickly. I was just down there for my turkey hunt and it looks like it will test your patients. It seems to be an area with great potential as you said but seeing the animals will be difficult. There are few areas to glass well so you basically have to concentrate on water and food and get in close to find the critters. I would invest in some trail cams to use on your hunt. This way you will be able to watch more areas at once. just my $.02 from what I saw of the area. I am sure muleymadness will set me straight if I am wrong. :)

I hunted out of Meeker, CO the last 3 years, so I'm just happy to not have to put up with that rat race this year. My friends brother and mother drew this tag in consecutive years a couple of years ago and had great hunts.

I know with archery, sometimes you can be snakebit on the success end of it so I don't tie my happiness to the killing. I'm hoping to just see some nice bucks and have a few chances.

No I haven't been out scouting yet. I'm leaving on Friday the 8th to go down and I'll scout until the opener. What do you mean by a hunt? Is this a good thing or a bad thing....now you've got me wondering!

Just curious about the elk. They take alot of the blame for the decline of the muledeer on the Pauns. I have yet to see a single elk in a summer of scouting and 5 and a half days of hunting. Hey Brett, Black Magic is alive and well. Seen him twice now. My bother has some rough footage of him. He does leave an impression when you see him on the hoof! I think he's been around the block a time or two. He knows how to elude pesky bow hunters no doubt.

As far as the elk go,i ran in to a herd of 50 or so only saw 1 6x6 and 1 spike the rest were cows . they were in the whiteman bench area. then i saw two bulls up the top of canyon meadow and another couple 5x5's atop robinson canyon. compared to my hunt five years ago, i would say i saw fewer big bucks this outing. but there are still alot of nice bucks runnin around.

what is this back magic you speak of?

Black Magic is a big ol cactus buck that Brett has made famous. Id say he's pushin 32 with a 2 point frame and mass from ####. He's got black velvet antlers .Its safe to say that hes old and he's huge body wise. 200+pounds. Try a search for some pics.

Paunsaugunt1,

I actually have a couple of still pictures of him from this summer. No video of him this year, 1st year I haven't tried to film him and just went after still pics. He is going to be VERY difficult to kill IMO. He is WAY smarter than he used to be and VERY tough now. I saw him on about 3 different occasions during the summer but he really doesn't like being seen much anymore and will take off on the dead run from a LONG ways off.

Best of luck, have you seen anything good or seen any bucks taken yet?

Wasn't going to share this yet, but what the heck you only live once. :)

Enjoy!!

He is one smart deer, I'll be impressed if a bow hunter takes him. And they better dang well let me know if they do. [-o< :thumb

I'm hoping he rides off into glory and dies of old age, sorry guys. His body is HUGE agreed.

I heard of a rumor that a kid from Panguitch killed "BLACK MAGIC" this last couple of days. I haven't seen pictures or anything but the rumor is that he killed a huge non-typical stag. Anyone else heard this??

Haven't heard this myself, hope someone can confirm if true.

Bret, I talked to the guy who killed the stag and it's not Black Magic. I am sure that he is still kicking around.

Brett Black Magic is one heck of a buck, you have been very blessed to be able to see this buck year after year. Nice job in keeping tabs on him, i to hope you either kill him or he dies of old age. Thanks for sharing the photo always love seeing that buck.

Thanks Jer,

I've had a blast watching him, this is the first year I didn't get any video of him. I left the video camera at home at went for still pics. Man it's tough. I doubt I'll draw a tag so I'm hoping he runs his time and old age gets him. :)

That is a welcome sight for me to see this great deer still alive. I had the opportunity to hunt him in 07 for 13 days. I think I saw him every single day except one. He is a master of escape. I had one shot at him and it was clean miss. Many people thought I was crazy for chasing such an "Ugly' Buck but being the muley nut that I am I really liked how unique he is. He is a very smart deer and body size is huge. He must be 9 or 10 years old. I actually have my missed shot on video. My range finder picked up a branch and I shot over him. I know of several other hunters that have failed also. Thanks for sharing the photo. His location is safe with me.

Welcome and thanks for sharing the story. I believe I know who you are through a friend and yes your correct as several skilled archers have came close and for whatever reason haven't been able to seal the deal. He is getting smarter and tougher every year it seems. This year is was WAY more difficult then I've ever seen him.

How do I go about seeing your video, you would make my day. :thumb

Let me get the small clip and see if I can get it online. It is only a small clip we met up in the cedars and it happend very fast. but it's really good footage of him up close. Is anybody hunting him this year. I scouted down there one evening this year and did not see him but that is common. i never saw him in the evening ever. I feel I know how to get it done with him now if he is doing the same thing as last year. I had a buddy that had a tag this year but I wouldn't tell him where he was at. I was lucky enough to have a good friend share his whereabouts and promised I would not tell a soul. It would be fun to swap stories. This buck has a special place in my heart. I really think he will die of old age.

I have now seen several stags that have come off of the paunsy but none of them have been black magic. I wish that someone could get him!! A trophy like that is just incredible but also it is incredible that no one has killed him. My buddy sure did try though and to get away from him you must be a smart animal.
25

Who is your buddy? He tried this year or last?

He tried last year or maybe two years ago!! Time goes by so fast that I don't remember when it was exactly. He ate tag soup cause he wanted to kill this buck so bad.

Fellas,
Glad to see that the Pauns thread is still alive and kicking.

As for Black Magic, I lucked into an encounter with him 2 days before the season. I got some decent footage of him with a group of other bucks. Black Magic definitely gets your attention! I hunted the area the first two days of the season and I gave up on him and another couple of bucks that I was after. They were in a big wide open flat, but it was adjacent to some thick stuff. I imagine that they go back into the thick stuff once the pressure hits.

I ended up having a great hunt. All I can say for the Pauns is that if it's down now....damn, what was it like before? Must have been pretty awesome.
25
tommycaller
I hope you get him, he would sure look good on the wall!

Black Magic is a site to behold isn't he. Did you tag out?

Yeah, I tagged out on the seventh day of the hunt with this nice tall 29.5" 5x4. It wasn't the biggest buck that I saw, but it's my best buck to date. I was totally thrilled with the hunt....what a place.

Well, like I mentioned it was a great hunt. In 13 days of scouting/hunting I got to look at 420 bucks. Now before you get too excited about this, yes some of these were the same bucks from one day to the next, but not were the same buck in the same day. All in all, we figure that somewhere between 220 and 250 were seperate individual bucks.

We saw 5 different cactus bucks, including Black Magic two days before the season opened. The buck I got was around the 5th to 7th biggest buck of the trip. I was told about my buck and another much larger buck running together from a guy on one of these websites. His information was dead on. It took me 5 days of hunting this area before I finally ran into the bigger of the two. He was a mid-thirties gigantic deep forked 4x4 that was near perfect. After a couple of close encounters, unfortunately I couldn't get a shot at him. The next day I went back into the same area and ended up catching my buck bedded with a couple of others. After a 26 yd shot, my hunt was over. Even though I didn't end up with the bigger buck, I was totally pumped with the one I did get. Like I mentioned, he was 29.5 inches wide and 20 inches tall. He has a short back tine and is missing one eyeguard. With that, he'll end up grossing in the 180's and I'll find out what he nets later.

Anyways, the Pauns is definitely a special place. Just don't go down there and expect to see big bucks everywhere. You still have to do your homework and hunt hard if you want a good one.
DD

swbuckmaster
DD I will guess that buck to go better than 180 gross.
My guess is 190+ gross and net in the 180s
