Pheasant Hunting

Seems odd there's no Pheasant hunters on Muley Madness. ???
But, I guess there are no Muley hunters on Pheasant Country. :-k

While I'm Pheasant hunting in MT the couple hours before dark I'm glassing Mule Deer. Helps me decide where I'll be opening morning, Oct 22. :thumb

I love to hunt pheasants. The big problem here in Utah is that almost all of the wild pheasants are gone. the only place you can get in some regular shooting is at a pheasant farm. I would imagine that there are still a few left on peoples farms but to getting on to hunt them would take an act of god.

I head to South Dakota every year for a combined pheasant/deer hunt. Our biggest problem is a lack of bodies to cover the ground we hunt. Yes it is worth the 14 hour drive from Colorado....

dbltrbl, Great to see you on Muley Madness. :) One of these years, I'll come up with you and help cover the ground or block for you. Especially if we can get some WT buck tags in SD's draw. Then I could talk the Bride into letting me go.

ms01, Good luck this weekend. Sounds like good weather too.

What breed of bird dogs do you have? Do you have photos?

For sure let us know how your weekend hunt goes. :thumb

got a female german wirehair pointer and a male english setter. the setter is still in training but I didn't lose one bird last year with it being his first so he should do better this year.

How is the Pheas. hunting up there this year? I have heard some talk that some think it won't be all that good. Now that is probably compared the last year though.
I am trying to decide if I should go up there during Thanksgiving. I know that things are awfully busy around then but I am a teacher and get a couple of days. This would be my first trip. Normally my hunting partner is my wife but this year we have a 7 month old son so I think it will just be me and my Golden Retriever.

Hi waynedevore,
I'm not sure what you mean by what part of MT, I live in CO.

Oh, now I get it, where am I going to hunt?

I really have no idea. I would just like to get up there and get into some wild birds. Any thougts?
I would love to go to SD but I am not really into hunting with crowds of people.

Treeline, Well I do have some thoughts.

All wild birds up there, and your right. You won't see many other bird hunters in MT anytime in November.

Best hunting is the river bottoms by the heavy cover and irrigated crops. All private land. There is also good hunting in tall grass CRP.

Good chance for a lone hunter to get permission on private property.

Nowhere in MT should you expect # of birds you would see in the Dakotas.

If I can be of more help let me know.

Got out a couple of weeks ago to do some pheasent shooting with the in-laws. I still won't call it hunting cause we were on a pheasent farm. Though they had some great birds and it was fun it still just isn't the same. Can't get used to shooting hens.

A pic of the family and I.

I can think of worse way of having to keep the peace with the in-laws ( I call them the by-law cause thats how I'm related to them is by law.)
