Pick Up Rack

I don't know if any of you on this forum care about Whitetails?

I have a 228 BC rack on skull that I found. Nontypical.

I want to have this mounted on a cape from the same area as I found the rack. [I have located a cape].

My question? The antlers are in perfect shape, but bleached. I want to get the natural brown back. Like that of a deer havested in Nov. I've tried a lot of different stains on sheds. Nothing looks quite right, anyone got any ideas.

We have found that Old English works real well for us in the past. Just rub it on lightly and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then start rubbing it back off. The more that you keep rubbing it the lighter it will get.(Like near the tips) If I can get a chance I'll post a picture of one that we did after we had to peel all the velvet off a set and then staind them up.

I had that happen once and used walnut oil base stain. Worked pretty good.

Here are a few pictures of a two point that we did in a europian mount. This is the one that we peel the velvet off of.

If you wanted the horns darker then just leave it on longer and don't rub so much after. The nice part is that if it doesn't come out dark enough at first just redo it until it does. Good Luck and Have Fun. :)

Thanks. When the guy that is teaching how to do taxidermy told me about it I looked at like he was nuts. But after I saw a rack that he did with it I was amazed at how well it worked. Hope it woks weel for you to. would love to see before and after pictures when you get it done. I'll send you a PM on how I post the pictures here if you would like. :thumb

Yes I would kike to learn how to post a pic. I will take a couple of photos today. Could I send them to you in email. I think the rack would be of interest to you. At the time it was officially scored it was 5th all time biggest MT Whitetail.

Just a thought. If you plan on doing a europian mount I would get the skull bleached out first. Then you won't have to worry about the stain getting messed up in the process.

Holy Smokes. That is one HUGE non-typical whitetail.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, I agree with a_bow_nut have that skull bleached and once that rack is finished it will look incredible.

Have you considered doing a shoulder cape mount?

Looks almost to impressive/big to just not to???

We are going to have a full cape mount done. My friend has a cape that he bought from a fellow taxidermist out of Broadus MT. I found the skull antlers in the Powder River bottoms so I needed a cape from the same area. Our Whitetails here in Mn are just not the same. The hold up has been staining the antlers.

I'll post photos when done. My taxidermist is swamped, and he hunts all fall, so I think early 07.I might work on him tho.

That buck is huge. Sweet find. He probably died of old age, or he broke his neck from carrying around that rack.

Great pic though, that would be awesome to walk up on a beast like that, I'll bet that was one of your better days on the mountain. Thanks for sharin though and definately post some finished photos as soon as it's done. This is gonna be one sweet mount!

Amazing deer! I was at a sportsmen show a few weeks back in Gonzales, LA and there was a very nice whitetail mount that I thought would look great next to one of my mulies over the fireplace. (Meaning I would like to take one that size myself, not buy a mount) Anyways, there was a tag on it, and me being just a good ole country boy, I thought it would give info on how taken, location, size, etc. Nope, it was a price tag. I recall it being a very nice typical 12 point (southern count now) with a price of $4995!!! My dad was with me and I looked at him and asked how much he thought my 7 point muley would bring! No, I would never sell it. It'll be passed down in the family, I hope. I guess my point is, if you wanted, after you get it mounted, you might be able to make a dollar or two on it. Though that would be a deer very hard to part with. Can't wait to see the pictures when it's finished.
