pine hens

anyone have pics of a pine hen ii hear about the all the time but never see them do you just need a small game liscense to shoot them or what?

are they the same as sage hens. if so i see tons around here

Not i do not believe they are the same as sage hens. And yes all you need is a small game permit. If it is the same bird that I am thinking of.

You must be talking about either Blue Grouse or Franklin grouse. Pine Hen is slang, or a local name for these grouse. For instance Spruce grouse are called fools hens in some areas and Sage Grouse are often called Sage Hens.

When most people in this state talk about pine hens they are either talking about Blue Grouse or Ruffed Grouse. There are Sage Grouse and a few Sharptail Grouse but both are few and far between. In fact Sage grouse are on a draw system now. They have been having a hard for quite a few years now.

When I get some time later I'll get some pictures up.

Thanks for the clarification guys. I was thinking of the Blue and Ruff. I have never hunted them but I am going to try this year. What do they taste like. I love pheasant and chuckar, are they close to them at all.

 The Blue and Ruffed Grouse are even better than Pheasant. But you should be really hungry before eating Sage or Franklin Grouse, -#-

lol that is what i have heard as well. That you should cook them on a pine board, then through the bird away and eat the board.

I think the ruffed grouse are much better than the blues and the ruffed are a lot more fun to hunt especially with dogs, the blues just stand there the ruffles like to take cover and hold when theres a dog after them, deffinetely not the same as the sage though LOL!
