Pistol-grip shotgun, gas launcher stolen from Cheyenne police van

CHEYENNE, Wyo. Someone smashed the rear window of a police van in Cheyenne and stole a pistol-grip shotgun, a tear gas launcher and rounds for both weapons.

Police say the theft occurred Wednesday when the SWAT van was parked in a lot in downtown Cheyenne. Police Chief Bob Fecht (FECKT) says an officer noticed the break-in around 1:30 p.m.

Fecht says a police officer had been training other officers. He says a couple of the trainees inadvertently left the shotgun and tear gas launcher in the van.

The shotgun is used mainly for blasting off doorknobs to get into buildings. Fecht says the tear gas launcher also could be dangerous at close range.

Police say several acts of vandalism occurred in the same area around the same time. There's concern that the weapons were stolen by youngsters.
