Planning a DIY hunt

I am trying to plan an archery elk hunt for this fall. We are going to put in for the new mexico draw if that fails we are looking at Colorado.
I have started sifting through the info on the Co. website. I notice some of the units are almost all public land, some are mostly private and some in the middle.

Do you guys have any preference for what mix is the best?

A good rule of thumb is that BLM is dry and lower elevation (it was land that was not taken during the land rush and usually because it had no water), national forest land is usually high elevation but well watered (elk are usually high during archery season). If there is lots of hunting pressure the elk immediately go to private land. Private land also holds food and water which holds elk too. Elk need lots of water.
