Prairie Elk

There was 230 elk introduced to the praries in 1997 here in Alberta, and they doing very well out in the open. This year they have introduced a draw to hunt some of them. Here are some pictures of some the elk that are out there.

F&W have never came out and said how many there are for sure just a est. of between 1500 to 2000. With no predators they are really expanding there range and growing they are starting to hit the farmers grain fields and hay fields down there. I put in for a draw there but i just wasn't lucky enought to get drawn.

Those are some great pictures.

A couple of those bad boys are up to shooting size now.

I hope that you can draw one of these tags in the future.

What are those bulls using to scrape velvet off their antlers out there in the prairie? It appears that most of them have nearly 6 inches of ivory tip on their points. I was under the impression that the ivory tips came from rubbing on trees.

Any wildlife biologists or prarie natives that know the answer?

That's a good question. I've been down in that area antelope hunting a couple times and there is little oasis of trees here and there. Where there use to be home steaders building sites that are long since abandoned with trees planted around them. I have no idea what these home steaders thought they could grow on that bald prairie but they must have been very tuff people. There are a few creeks that are down there with some willows growing along them but they are few and far between and there is the Red Deer river that has willows and polar trees growing on it's banks. I found this picture when we were down there hunting if you look to left of this picture there is a grove of trees in this valley where the Red Deer river runs. Very hard to see but i know they were there.

Man i wish i lived in alberta, i'm in the kootneys to the west. Man i'm feeling that wide spread bull, all the elk hear are spooky after the first shot so u got to go high up to the plateaus and leave all the timber rats to themselves, there are some big guys in that low stuff but very spooky.
