Preference points/units/season???

Hi, I just started applying for deer preference points last year. I'm just wondering what unit I should hold out for and how many preference points it will probably take to draw a tag? Also looking for recommendations on which season is the best to send in for? I've hunted in Colorado and shot elk and mule deer, but never in a trophy unit, and always during the second season. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
