If this is your first bow put an add in the paper or look in it for one. Most newer bows will go for hundreds of dollars so start with a cheaper used one, i picked up an XI Velocity for $75.00 was a nice bow, you might not even like bow hunting so see if you really want to do it before you tie up a lot of money for one, also check on ebay.

Not sure there is a typical. You can spend about anything you can imagine.

You can get a real decent starter bow for around $300.00 and there are some basic packages available in that same range. Most of the top of the line bows are running $600-$700 for a bare bow.

Another option is to go to ebay. There are a lot of used bows you can get into cheap as in the $150-$200 range. You have to be careful buying used.

I would probably go with a starter bow. Some to look at would be;
Bear Element, PSE deer hunter package or Nova, Martin Jaguar or cheetah , Parker Spitfire outfitter or Buck Hunter outfitter, Browning rage, Reflex Bighorn, and I sure there are others that other MM members can speek to.

Bow hunting is a tremendous sport that no matter what will make you a better hunter overall. :arrow

Coloradobuck,
I have an old Bear Black Bear compound bow in real good shape, since you are starting to try bow hunting if you can make it good with your mother and its ok i will sell it to her for $50.00 and you pay shipping cost, which shouldn't be very much. If you are interested i will try to send you some pictures later.

The first thing you need to find out is what draw length you need to shoot. Go to a pro shop, or at the very least google the draw length question and measure your draw length.

If you start off shooting a bow that doesn't fit you, you probably won't be happy with your shooting results. Draw length is one of the more critical factors on choosing the right bow.

Good luck!

The problem I have with not going with good equipment right off the bat is that the person trying it sours because of accuracy, noise etc.... I believe it could actually be a detriment when people are trying new things. I'm not saying go out and buy a new top of the line bow, but go modern and get the real feel of the sport. I started with good equipment in 1984 and have been hooked ever since.
