Question about the "BLM"

My friend two weeks ago came back from a shed hunting trip down south and he did find some huge nice sheds, but my questions is he ran into a BLM officer and not only did he say everyone could drive their fourwheelers off road as long as they do not destroy the ground, but also that if he was finding antlers to sale or build with or profit from that it was illegal to do so, but you could pick them up as long as you just collect them? :-k

Has anyone ever heard of this on BLM property?

Personnaly I just laughed. :)) lol

You can only drive vehicles on designated roadways. It is ILLEGAL to take ANYTHING of value from BLM,this includes antlers, fossils and minerals without a mining claim.

Not if the local Federally decides you are doing it for profit.I know a guy that got nailed for picking up some fossalized snail shells,he learned the BLM laws the hard way,you cant take ANYTHING if they decide to enforce their rules.

If the feds think you are doing it for profit(selling antlers) they could cause you some problems, odds are against it but be aware of the posabillity.

It's illegal to take fossils, artifacts, bones, from federal lands. Recreational shed hunting and gathering is still OK. But WSA's NWR, like The Charles M Russel Refuge it is illegal to have sheds in you possession while on the refuge. Laws are getting more strict yearly. :>/

When i went to my bison orientation course the DWR had the BLM come so that they could explain their rules for travel on BLM lands. You are not allowed to travel off road in any vehicle other than the usual pull outs and camping spots. You also have to watch out for how the roads are posted. Some may open to atv's and some aren't. For the most part is just depends on which one you happen to run accross. Most are nice and melow while other just have a chip on their shoulder.

Don't know what the defination of a "designated road" is but 2 tracks are fair game on BLM land.

You can also travel off road to collect downed game.
i don't know about other states but this is not the case on NM state land. On road travel only.

BLM rules are the same EVERYWHERE,no offroad travel and only on DESIGNATE ROADWAYS,our blm lands have tons of 2 track that you CAN NOT drive on.If they catch you on your 4 wheeler off of designate raods say goodbye to it,they will confiscate it and fine you.

Nonya,
Our NM BLM land has tons of 2 tracks that you CAN drive on and 33 percent of the BLM is open to CROSS-COUNTRY travel. Don't even need a 2 track.

Here is the BLM web page that verifies what I just said:
http://www.blm.gov/nm/st/en/prog/recreation/recreation_activities/off_highway_vehicles.html

Here is one of the 3 types of offroad designations from that page:

Open areas: Open areas are available for all forms of cross-country travel. Vehicles may be operated anywhere within the posted boundaries of open areas. This designation covers about 33 percent of BLM-administered public lands in New Mexico.

So much for the rules being the same everywhere. There not even the same in different areas of BLM land in NM.

Here is an idea WALK! and then you don't have to worry about get your wheeler taken or paying a heavy fine.
Now having said that I know that you can drive off roads in my neck of the woods as longs as you are not on the monument.
