Region G, wyoming

i was just visiting another site that i frequently like to go to and they had a on going poll question for there members. the question was this "do feel that tag numbers should be cut for residents and non-residents alike for this particular area"? i took the poll and answered the questions as honestly as possible.

i must admit i had to put some serious thought into the matter. let me elaborate for a second if you would all bare with me! there are many upon many aspects a hunter must look at. 1. are you looking for quality or quantity! this is usually the straw that brakes the camels back. i am not going to get into any discussion about this aspect, the topic is quality over quantity or visa versa. 2. you have on going damage to our national forest and blm lands, as well as private land. 3. you have folks that are extremely greedy and looking to make a buck instead of protect our heritage, our history, our present, and our future. you have land owners, and outdoor enthusists alike. and on and on!

now with that being said let me say this. if you do cut tags there is are many drawbacks and there is going to be unhappy folks as well as happy folks. i know because it is a on going disagreement that my dad and i have. the negatives; less tags, possibly years without any hunting at all, less local, state, federal profits, and many many more

the positive; quality, quality, quality, quality, did i forget any

so my answer to the question, yes i am in 100% agreeance with cutting tags for residents and non alike. and let me say this. i put in for a area for twelve years that has reasonable chances of drawing, so my luck is crappy at best when it comes to drawing.

what is your thoughts?

Wymuley man,

We have the draw sysyem in Oregon and I hate it! Two years in a row I didn't draw in my own area, 95% private land. Our nice deer are still here but we are over run with does. If you want quality, what you need, my opinion, is a four point or better law and shoot off some of the does! An area can only support so many deer and sex doesn't matter. And the better bucks can service only so many does, the rest are left to inferior bucks.

The body size of deer is slowly dropping, perhaps incest has something to do with it? At any rate, I'm sure that many of the nice yet stupid, forks killed every year would grow to be very nice bucks if left alone to grow up. How many two year old boy's are 6"2" and 230 lbs that can bench press 300 lbs? Not many!!!!!!!!

So it is with deer. We can't wait for the baby's to grow up and keep allowing more and more does to consume more and more of the available food supply.

the whole issue of trophy management on mule deer has been a topic that to say the least has left me in shambles many times. i have got alot different opinion on alot of people that i associate myself with. not that there is noone else that feels the same as me, just in my tight group of hunting partners we tend to disagree. they tend to be more elk hunters and use deer hunting simply as a excuse to be in the country. i on the other hand am a trophy deer hunter, i could pretty much care less for elk. i enjoy hunting them, i just have not got the will to be more enthuisatic about elk. i like the species of elk, i love bugling and playing with elk, i love photographing them, and all the other things i just have never been a big trophy elk hunter.

with that being said, i agree with you, i feel some of the best areas wyoming has to offer are being over hunted and allowing way to many forkies to be shot. now i don't blame a guy that wants to shoot a forky, whatever, that is there deal. but for example back in my home town of rawlins there is national forest about 40 miles south of rawlins and it is a general area, meaning for residents the tags are over the counter. and on top of that about every other year they allow for any deer to be taken. so what you have are alot of people buying these tags and they will hunt for a buck until about day three and as soon as they get discouraged they shoot the next deer they see, usually being a doe or forky. so the age of the deer out there is about max. 3 years old. if you take a deer that is over 3 you have really done something. they just don't make it that long.

if i were allowed to change the seasons and tag types i would do it just like this. there would be a quota of about 2000 instead of 6000-7000 tags. it would be a three week season, the first two weeks would be 4 pts or better. the last week would be 4 pts or better or does. giving the meat hunters a chance to put there tags on something. and in the mean time weeding out some of the doe population. in my opinion the buck to doe ratio is so out of whack it is not even funny. i would do this for probably 7-8 years and then re-evaluate the situation. i think the biggest problem is the pressure is too great in the forest. there are still good deer out there, but they are pressured so hard good luck finding one. i have seen them and still see them during the off season. they exist out there. the hunting season is just so hard on them.

Right on. Welcome to my world, or maybe it's me to your's. Either way, it would work. Unfortunally, sport hunting is not about quality hunting for the state's; it's an income producing resourse.[/quote]
